I can fight the first monster and make the jump over the lava, but I can't seem to open the door.

Go towards the big closed door at which the cannon is pointing and then on the left side you can go upstairs into a small cave. After that cave you'll be on top of the lava where you'll find a key that will open one of the closed doors.

Don't feel bad. I was stuck there also. It will also happen several more times.

As the tip suggests, use F1 to check the keys at any time, in this case you use E to activate the door.
