You can colonize a town you control to increase your population. You can even do this with troops you've just recruited. So if you have a lot of money and need a lot of population (for instance because you're doing Odin's quest as the elves) you can recruit all available viking swords and archers and have them colonize your capital to grow it. I just increased Alfheim from 120 to 300 pop in a single turn.
