I have a CD copy of the game, and it says I can connect to massgate as well as a LAN network for multi-player. But every time I try this, it starts updating and then the menu disappears!!! Whats going on here?

I am playing the GOG version of GC2.
No problems playing over LAN,
and I am able to connect to Massgate without any problems too, though there are no available online games to be found.
