A friend showed me this game years ago, and the name sounded kinda dumb, be he wanted someone to play against... So I got it from Best Buy(@ $20). I ran it, and was blown away by the visuals ~understand this was early 2000 or 2001 or so, so its amazing graphics (which were tough to do at the time), have long since been surpassed by the more forgiving (IE. powerful) desktop environment of today ~still, the graphics are great; and the gameplay is excellent.
Typical missions are goal based air drops from space into hostile territory. Players can configure their squads prior to launch to achieve a light fast crew, a heavy hitting crew, or something in between ~and they have two squads each and the 2nd unit can be dropped at any time after the first.
Both Squads can be configured independently using a mix of unit types (decided by you) and bring along special weapons, ammo, and gadgets (like portable repair stations) to aid (or entrench).
You can pick from power armored infantry, light armored covert OPs, recon craft, light assault craft and heavy armored tanks.
By far the unit I love the best is the heavy artillery tank. Its slow moving but can lob heavy mortars up and over a mountain or two, to blow the hell out of unsuspecting enemies. ~Later in the game you can acquire fighter aircraft & bombers.
The story is basically a bit 'Dawn of War' meets Wall-Street (in that the armies are actually private corporate owned strike teams and the main enemy is a dark religious cult); but this was before Dawn of War, and its not set that far in the future.
I picked this one up again while it was free on Fileplanet a few years ago... but I lost the serial key, so I'm about to buy it again tonight.
4½ stars from me
(Heh...not 5 stars... The lip sync in the mission briefs is awful, but that's a trivial thing).
