Is there any way to increase the resolution more than 1024x768? I'm on a 1440x900 monitor, and either way I look at it I see huge pixels of the doom kind. The stretching does not bother me that much, and I'm on a standard vga cable, so no flat panel scaling options for me.

Does it have any .config files in its game folder you can open up with notepad? That would be the best place to start looking for resolution settings.

There's a settings.dat file in the \Ground Control and Expansion\data\games folder, but upon opening it with the best text editor out there (notepad), the file looks like this:

Try to open the file with wordpad instead of notepad. If it's still gibberish, try to look for a .ini file instead of that one.

Still gibberish. No .ini files around, radared for one but there's none. No settings in the registry either.
Opening the .dat file in wordpad yields no results, so I thought of using a hex editor for the job, although I wouldn't have any clue as to what values to hunt for.
Any ideas? I thought at least someone tried running this software in higher res than 1024x768.

I just downloaded the free version of Ground Control and i can't find a way to do it either.
I found the settings.dat file but like you said, it's gibberish.
I'm not saying there isn't some way to do it, just that i didn't find one.

I've opened gc.exe in a hex editor and looked up some resolution values. This is something that came up:
Incorrect MAXRES in capability file (640, 800, 1024 allowed)
MAXRES ReadCapabilities(): Too many caps
No Capability file! capabilities.txt
As far as I understand, the game looks for a capabilities.txt file, containing (maybe) a MAXRES value, but I have no idea where to create this file or where to find it, should it already exist.

Actually, that's probably error strings for it to use when it fails to get a correct (or one it can understand, anyway) response to its querying of your graphics card/driver/directx setup.

Setting resolution in this game was odd for me I could only select 1024x768 but after playing for a couple of sec's then returning to the resolution menu I was able to select 1680x1050, very odd!

I'm downloading it now, and I'll give hex edits a shot tomorrow evening. I've had success hexediting a number of previous games, so I'm optimistic.

I really wonder what "Remag" was going for. I hope the implication wasn't that a simple batch file specifying the width would be sufficient...that would possibly rule out widescreen :-/

gah, i hereby give up. the game hates us and doesn't want us to play in custom resolutions..

I found the solution for this.

1. Back up your GC EXE file
2. Get a hex editor (http://sourceforge.net/projects/hexbox/)
3. Open up the GC EXE in the hex editor

Now, go to the bottom of the exe file and start scrolling up. A bit up in the file you will find all the resolution settings.

make sure you select the resolution that you wanted ingame. I picked 1024X768

Now, find that number in the file, it will be in clear text and look like 1.0.2.4.X.7.6.8 (i think, cant remember if there was an X involved between).

Change the values to your normal screen resolution (in my case 1.9.2.0.X.1.2.0.0

It worked wonders and the screen is a lot crisper in that resolution.

EDIT: as expected, it didn't work. i changed the plain-text 1.0.2.4 & 7.6.8. to my native resolution. I then selected 1024x768 in game, and it rendered at 1024x768.

If you are confident that you've actually increased the rendering resolution as described, please post a super-hi-res screenshot to prove it. Again, thanks for your efforts. I would love to see this actually happen.
