I was really excited to play this game again as I never got to finish it back in the day, so I pre-ordered it here as soon as it became available (despite still having my original copy, I'd much rather play it with an updated control scheme and proper compatibility). I ran into a problem before I could even start, though, namely it doesn't start at all. When I click on the .exe, the game tries to run (I see it lingering in the task manager for a few seconds before vanishing completely), but ultimately it doesn't, without giving any error messages.

My relevant specs are:

CPU - Intel Core i3
Memory - 4 GB RAM
Graphics - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
OS - Windows 7 Professional 64-bit (with the latest updates)

(It's a laptop, by the way, if that matters.)

Tried running both as an administrator and a normal user. Any idea? Thanks in advance for any helpful comments!

Please check and make sure your video card supports OpenGL 3.3 :)
Same here FFS

Crashes on startup for me too, with the message "GrimFandango.exe has stopped working". Sometimes I get see a Double Fine logo and hear the first few notes of a song playing, but then it shuts down.

OS: Win7 64 bit
Graphics Card: GTX 970 (OpenGL 4.4)
Memory: 16GB
CPU: i7 4770K
Resolution: 2560x1440. I tried knocking it down to 1920x1080, but same problem there.

Tried compability mode, running as admin etc.

Edit: Alright, made it work here. I had the Action video recorder running in the background. Disabling that did the trick.

It supports OpenGL 4.4
Having the same issue, installed the game 3 times now and every time it fails to start.

Windows 7 64-bit Home Premium
6GB RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000 (supports opengl 4.0)

Gutted it isn't working :(
One of the few games I could never get working before and looks like it's back to haunt me
intel gpu had an issue on my system. if you are on laptop please check whether the game runs on your dedicated gpu. cause making GF run on my 750M fixed a black background issue for me (game did run on my system though.)

my specs:
win 7 64bit
i5 4200m
GF750m

update graphics card drivers
run as admin.
reinstall the game.

other standard fixes.
Same problem for me.

Windows 7 pro 64 bit
Core i5 cpu
Intel 4000 HD graphics card
8bg ram

Tried everything I could think of and find as a solution. When I ask for more details about the crash this comes:

I have tried searching for StackHash_0a9e on Google, and there was a few suggestions there, but none worked. I have updated DirectX drivers as suggested, run as admin, restarted the computer, reinstalled the game and I have tried updating the graphics card driver, but cannot since its specific for my laptop.

I hope someone finds a fix for this. i will probably try running it on my other computer tomorrow.

Download it directly from Intel's site? You may need to uninstall the laptop specific driver before installing the reference Intel one.
Nice :) I could not install the Intell driver, but uninstalling and reinstalling the graphics driver helped, so now the game is running as it should. Thanks for the tip.
Having the same problem here!

I'm trying to run it on my laptop...

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
Intel Core i7
8Gb RAM
Intel HD Graphics 4000

But the game doesn't even start or give me a crash dialogue. Nothing! I click and then nothing happens.
I've reinstalled it, restarted the machine, updated all drivers and nothing...
Managed to get mine working :D

I see a few people here have pretty much the same specs as me, including the Intel HD Graphics.
To get it working I had to go in to Device Manager and uninstall the Intel HD Graphics Card (don't freak out, it will probably screw with your display by reverting to VGA).
Download the Intel® Driver Update Utility from the Intel site and use it to reinstall the HD Graphics card.
Restart and it should work.

Hope this helps
I also have this problem on my Acer 3820TG with ATI 5650 and an i5-460M (not sure what HD version this amounts to).

With ATI, I get the same "BEX" error. Intel complains I have no OpenGL at all. Using the latest ATI Drives did not help, either. I wish there were a proper exception description with the game crashing straight away :-(

Thanks I was having the same problem as well and was a little skeptical if this would work but it did! The game launches fine now. I have the Intel HD Graphics 4000 on a win 7 machine and it crashed on launch with an error (BEX) mentioned above
