I'm in Chapter 6 and I'm trying the "Cup and Ball Psychic trick" on the Handyman.

I got it wrong the first time, and now when I try again, he keeps switching the cups without ever stopping.

The trick is described in your magic book.

When you click on the handy man the game starts.
- Look at which position the marked cup is (it's the one with the smudge, see #1 in the attached screenshot)
- Remember its position number and wait for the switching to start
- Now keep track of the smudged cup
- When the switching is over, look at the cups
- If the marked cup is at the position you expect it to be due to tracking, the ball is under it
- If on the expected position is an unmarked cup, the ball is under the other unmarked cup

The only difficulty here is keeping track of the rather fast switches.

Thanks, but that is not the problem.

I made an error the first time, and now, when I try it again, he never stops flipping the cups.

It goes on and on and on, and I never get to the part where I get to choose again.

Oops, that's a bug. I tried it exactly like you did and made an error the first time, but here it still runs as expected the second time.

Shut down the game and start it again. Load your safe game and retry. If that doesn't help, close and restart the game again and then try an older save game. You might even want to reboot your PC, because you never know what causes such a loop.

I already did what you said, even deleted and reinstalled the game.

I'll reload an old savegame to see if it helps.

I hope I don't I have to play it all again only to find out that this bug persists.
So I reloaded an old savegame and tried it again, it works now.

I tried to replicate the bug by getting the first one wrong again, but the bug didn't come again.

That's great, there's nothing worse than a game breaking bug in a nice game. I wasn't able to replicate it as well, so we're left with no clue how and why it happens, but as long as falling back to an older save works, this isn't dramatic.

As always, the old maxim: "Save early, save often, save in multiple different slots" holds true ;)
its a glitch, even without making a choice the switches continue for around 6-8 times, the book states that they do it only twice, once in private and the second time outloud. I tried waiting till the animation stopped and then choosing randomly as I didnt see the mark on the cup, and also fast forwarding thru the animations and then choosing. also randomly

What eventually worked was trying to remember the last switch numbers and then look for the thumbprint position.. in that case it was not mentioned in the last switch so i chose the marked cup. meh... it could have just been luck, i chose wrong around 10 times. it did advance the story after that

I think the cups are supposed to switch several times after the first time, otherwise it would be too easy.
Solving this isn't hard and pretty straight forward, see post 2 in this thread.
the rapidity of the switching in my case was too fast to even read, one could at the last bit see the last set of numbers. It was all rather confusing and brought one out of immersion. however, it could be worked around and progress resumed
