I notice you can get Shadowbeast horns from a chest... and I'm fairly certain I have all the creature harvesting skills but a shadowbeast I killed did NOT drop a horn.

Is there a way to get them to drop horns, or is this just an item that exists but isn't functionally obtainable in Gothic1?
This question / problem has been solved by kojocelimage
You cannot get those normally.
If you killed all shadowbeasts in the game, one will spawn during Ulu Mulu quest in the forest between Old Camp and the Brotherhood. During that quest you'll be able to loot its horn.

And, of course, you can get those from that chest in castle (Old Camp).
Wow, fast response, never using the Steam forums again...

Thanks :D

Steam? What is that? :-)
Just found a follow-up question and given the relevance of the topic it seems like I should post it here:

After receiving the Ulu-Mulu quest, do ALL slain Shadowbeasts drop Shadowbeast Horns? [Or more specifically: While you HAVE the Ulu-Mulu quest, do they drop them?]

I fully intend to test this, but I'm not absolutely confident there is more than one remaining Shadowbeast in my game to test it on...

If I remember correctly, yes (actually I'm pretty sure).
But if you test it and prove me wrong, please post back your results.

Okay, I just took out a second Shadowbeast and it also dropped all the goods. This also seems to hold true for ANY creature in the Ulu-Mulu quest.

Though now I'm wondering... it seems unlikely that there'd be two Shadowbeasts in the same spot, are you totally sure that no creatures are overwritten upon respawning(or, that creatures are not spawned upon detecting creatures already alive)? I could test this in a second playthrough, though it'd take a while.

Yes, I am sure beyond any doubt.

Prior to Ulu Mulu quest, there are only two shadowbeasts in the game
- one near the undead cave with the focus stone (where you meet Milten)
- one in the forest between Old Camp and Brotherhood.

If you don't kill any by then, there will be a total of three:
- the one near the cave
- two in the forest.

Forgetting the one at the Old Monastery where you meet Gorn(this one doesn't respawn), but excepting that i'm pretty sure you're totally right.

I'm getting old. :D

On a side note, there may be one more spawning in the forest between the Old Camp and the Old Mine - you minght want to check that place as well.

Oh, I mistook what you said earlier- yes, I came across one there when I had not seen one before the Ulu-Mulu quest. I don't think a shadowbeast spawns there UNTIL the Ulu-Mulu quest.

Yep, that's what I meant.

Now that comes to think of it, if my memory doesn't deceive me (I may be wrong, that is), there are a total of 3 new monsters (of every type you need) that spawn during Ulu Mulu quest.
- 3 trolls
- 3 shadowbeats
- 3 fire lizards
- 3 swampsharks.

I found 2 respawned shadowbeasts, both in a forest location(only one, in between Old Camp and Broterhood, spawned in a previous known Shadowbeast location); 3 fire lizards in the three spots I know them to have been before; at least 3 swampsharks (possibly a 4th or 5th); and only one troll, in the area where you meet Diego.

To my knowledge there are 2 troll spawnpoints, and one of them only spawns a Juvenile Troll and only once. The first point is actually kind of ridiculous- I managed to take it out in late chapter 1 or chapter 2, it respawned with Diego and then it spawned there again for the Ulu-Mulu quest.

When all this is said and done, it's possible that I just overlooked some areas where they may have spawned.
So much misinformation in here ... just for anybody stumpling upon this via Google:

Tarok basically teaches you to take new animal trophies for free. Same as minecrawler mandibles or plates. So of course anything that got taught for the quest will still result in extra loot. And there are a bunch of Shadowbeast horns in the tower of the old camp, yes.

There are 3 shadowbeasts before the Ulu-Mulu quest: Stonehenge, Monastery, Forest between OC and SC

There are 2 trolls and 1 young troll before the Ulu-Mulu quest. It's the same troll, it spawns a second time in the focus valley when you kill the troll before Chapter 3. The young troll spawns in the monastery.

There are a couple of fire lizards before the Ulu-Mulu quest. At the ships, next to the orc city, and next to Xardas Tower.

Now, when the Ulu-Mulu quest gets triggered:

3 shadowbeasts spawn: Stonehenge cave, old mine forest (in the tunnel), and forest betweeen OC and SC.

3 trolls spawn: Monastery on the other side of the cliff, focus valley, and at the old mine

Another couple of fire lizards spawn (more than 3, since already 2+1 spawn in the orc region), in the exact same locations as before.

Another monster that will respawn is the bridge golem if you kill it before chapter 3. Same with 3-4 harpies that respawn when you've killed them all before. Same with the gobbos around the focus valley troll.

Generally a good rule of thumb is to kill anything that can respawn before it respawns for maximum XP early on. Although if you really do need XP, you can just use the demon generator in the orctemple (or summon some golems and demons and beat them up). ;)
