Hello all,

I've heard about this series for a long time now and finally decided to pull it from my extensive backlog.

I see the "patches" sticky which I will follow, esp for graphics and mouse support.

I'm starting with Gothic 1 and -assuming I like it- will be continuing the series from there.

So, what I would like are some character creation tips first, even maybe the easiest first-build for a beginner, and then some helpful gameplay tips for a beginner.

Thanks in advance!
yes i know this is a very old post, but good info never is out of date so here goes..

1) With your new character for a beginner. You want to ignore sneak, lockpicking, acrobatics, pickpocket. All pretty useless except for a few cases. Never train them at all.

2) First time become a warrior/archer. Get your dexterity exactly high enough to use your best bow, your first goal is to get to 95 strength asap so your melee weapons do more damage. You can get +5 strength in new camp with a quest, so don't go over 95. Don't drink Perm strength (or dex, mana, etc) potions until you train to max of 100. This way you'll have high strength to do ok in melee, with a bow as backup since there are many places archery is much better later. Ignore magic the first time as a new character.

3) Also when you start you'll encounter a ranger down near the bridge who teaches hunting skills. You want to get all of these asap so you can collect monster parts when you kill them. You might find a book also about flies about. read it to gain the skill to collect stingers from flies. Read any book you find, who knows.

4) So starting off, head into old camp. Start doing quests there. Start looting chests in the huts all around. You can use the combat cheat to get into the inner castle and loot nice things (drop any ore nearby so you aren't looted if your killed, which is the ONLY thing they can loot from you). Plenty of great weapons and amulets in the inner castle. or play normally and get them later. If you don't want to abuse in-game programming bugs/occurances, ignore the combat glitch and get into the castle area during normal play.

So again, get strength to 95 asap, get the +5 strength from the quest later. Get just enough dexterity to use bows you find, since your mostly melee your strength is more important, but you WILL be using bows later, some great bows you can get, plus easy to kill some foes who can't attack you back. Learn the hunting skills asap.
Best advice is don't be afraid to be a cunt. You're not a noble hero on a quest to save the world, you're a criminal who's been thrown into an anarchic mess of a penal colony. A good example of how this can get you some easy and fun money early on is mugging. In the Old Camp, guards will only have your back if you pay them for protection. This applies not just to you, but to other NPCs. So you can pay the fee, and freely beat up and loot the various diggers who for the most part can't afford the fee and the guards won't give a shit. Even if you do take a swing at someone who's paid, running away and waiting for the heat to die down is a perfectly viable strategy.

So yeah, dick it up and you'll do quite well.
