I believe I remember reading in the deceased RPGdot forums that someone managed to keep Mud alive all the way to the end of the game and he got stronger and could even accept better weapons.

I bought Gothic just recently and deliberately avoided Mud for a good long while. Then I went and brought him along for a time, enough to get through all of the dialogues he did (they loop after some twenty or thirty lines). Then took out a sword and kicked his ass, looted his body and told him to sod off when he recovered.

It was priceless.

Mud: "You're a lunatic! I want nothing to do with you! You hit me!"
You: "Yeah. I'm into that kind of thing."

Yea I wanted Mud help me fight a wolf at the time and then bam dead next second while he gave me time to run. good times...good times.

Funny. Ocassionally Niels Ruf even sounds a bit like Mud in the German version. Anyways: One of the developers once talked to us about the game and also explained some stuff about Mud. All I remember he said was that Mud was supposed to not only be annoying but also a total sicko and pervert. Some of his remarks suggest that he's both gay and a zoophile (and the developers were apparently even surprised that only few players understood this).
