I htought I'd try this skill once - in my many playthroughs, I've never pickpocketted. I am a "master". I've read that to pickpocket, one talks to an NPC and the option appears. However, I've tried a dozen NPCs and not once have I received this option. This is the GOG version patched with the systems pack. What the heck am I doing wrong?
I've never gone for pickpocketing in Gothic 1 either.
But I remember to have read that you also need to have learned to sneak. Then you need to approach your target from behind while sneaking. To get the option, click on the person.

It appears that your attempt may fail when noticed not only by the victim, but also by anybody else around.

Thanks. Correct on all accounts. It's a pretty useless thing as most characters stand in pairs or more, named charcters cannot be picked, and most templers and guards will turn to face you and will notice if you sneak. I've managed a grand total of three picks for a bunch of low value junk.
