I played gothic 3 on my new updated PC and it lags like crazy! I've tried setting the graphics lower to no avail. If anyone knows what to do shoot me a message.

My system specs:

Windows 7 home premium 32 bit

4 Gigs of ram

Nvidia Ge-force GTS 240

Intel i5 processor
I suspect your video card is the problem... It's not very good and Gothic 3 needs GPU power. Maybe you can use some utility to measure GPU usage and see if it's at 100% when playing Gothic. Search for GPU-Z, that's a tool to show GPU load. Run it, then run Gothic, load a game and alt-tab out to see GPU usage. You may have to check the "log while in the background" (or something) box in GPU-Z first.

EDIT: What screen resolution are you using? Have you tried lowering it?

i doubt the video card is the issue here because i play skyrim at high settings and i don't get lag, but with gothic 3 it's hard to describe the lag i'm getting its like i push the button to walk and the nameless hero keeps going that way for a second but the game isn't choppy

oh and my resolution is 1280x1024 i don't like the widescreen monitors

I had the same issue at first, adjusted all the video settings to lowest, and that made it playable, but the view was cloudy and restricted. What really did the trick was the Gothic 3 community patch, supported by the developers:

http://www.worldofgothic.com/dl/?go=dlfile&fileid=166

You end up with the official Enhanced Edition, cleared up any lag and made all the difference for me. I still have to play in 640 X 480, but it looks and sounds great -- this game has a huge map and can be very confusing, so it's important to be able to see rooftops, towers, etc.in the distance to help you get your bearings.

Good luck, this is a long, long game, but absolutely epic (and read the manual, p. 22, for combat options -- I read all the time about "clickfest" and limited combat, but it's simply not true, combat is specific for every single creature in this game.)
