Im getting the above error when attempting to launch the game. Google tells me that its a not-uncommon issue with any version of the Catalyst drivers after 3.9, and that the solution is to downgrade my drivers. First problem there is I'd rather not nuke my drivers back to the stone age to get one game running, and second problem is that as far as I can tell drivers that old are not available for Vista or 7, and I dont have an XP install anymore, nor a copy of it even if i wanted to make a partition for it just to run one game. That being said, anyone know how I might either solve this issue without downgrading my drivers, or a workaround for getting old drivers working in a post-XP OS without killing my modern drivers?

Send a DXDIag with that exact error message to GOG tech support ....

There may be a solution to both your issues.
Instead of the stock ATI Catalyst drivers, use the third party Omega Drivers;
http://www.omegadrivers.net/.
They are compatible with all ATI Desktop card and most Laptop cards. They're basically a slight optimization of the official drivers, repackaged, although they come without the Catalyst Control Center this can be downloaded separately from the ATI site.
I've been using Omega Drivers for months now and never had a problem running any game, new or old. In fact, some of the newer run better with Omega Drivers than with the stock drivers. This is especially detectable in laptops where the stock drivers are updated seldom / not at all.
You could download and try this. Uninstall your stock drivers before installing Omega Drivers.
I have had no problems whatsoever playing both Gothic games on the Windows 7 beta and RC with an ATI video card (an HD 3850, to be precise) regardless of what driver version I was using. Unless you have a legacy card (anything before the HD line) or a mobile/integrated GPU I doubt this is a driver issue.
EDIT: Did you try reinstalling the game? Also, are you using the official drivers from ATI's website instead of the ones from Windows Update?

I keep getting that on my win7/32bit + 8800GTX card...
Try the 1.08k patch. It was made for this very problem.

The GOG release is already patched to 1.08k.
It shouldn't be, then. The release notes say to only apply the patch IF you have that specific problem.
