Gothic doesn't have "classes" as such. In G2NotR, there are three different organizations you can join, and they each offer different kinds of special training. In each case you have to explore and complete a few quests before you will be accepted into their ranks. The three groups are the Monastary of Fire, the Paladins of Innos, and the Mercenaries. The first teaches magic, the second teaches combat and magic, and the third teaches combat and the best smithing techniques. Beyond that, joining one of the groups means joining its particular agenda.

For a beginner, the easiest faction to join is probably the Mercenaries. Fighting with a big sword or axe is pretty straightforward. Becoming a Fire Mage is probably the hardest, since it requires a bit more questing, and, in order to be really effective, some metagame character planning of Learning Point distributions and knowledge of which spells are the best. Paladins are somewhere in between.

I knew that but I meant it more like what weapon is better, what style of play. That's what I meant, but thanks for the answer. Some helpful tips in there.

Hmm...I don't know that there's one "best" weapon for a new character. Just use the best one your stats qualify you for.

In the long run, Mercenaries have access to the best melee weapons.

Playing a magician character can be brutally difficult in the beginning unless you know what you're doing.

You can be successful with a DEX-based archer character. There are a few melee weapons in the game that use DEX as the primary stat instead of STR (although they still use STR for damage bonuses).

It is very easy with an archer just push a high dex and bow skill and you can kill easily almost all monsters. It is even possible to max out bow skill 100% with a very high dex to use the best bow and to have a one handed perfect skill 100% and high str as well. But i would first max out bow for an archer you will have an easy time. Just at the beginning you must go very close to the monsters. An use the jump trick from 29-34 when you increase dex and str. An use everything to increase dex and str and all books. Use them late in the game when increasing dex or str gets very costly. Complete guides are at:
