Arkose: You have to pick one or the other. The same goes for any other quest where you can decide whether to report someone's crimes.

lordhoff: Even if you report him, he eventually gets out and blackmails you for the 500. BTW, you get a better weapon from Sarah.
Yeah I know, read the story ;)
the best way of dealing wih canthar imo is avoid him all the time until you are strong enough to beat him, then accept his quest, turn him over to Lord Andre and collect the bounty, then visit him in prison beat him up and kill him. pay the fine to Lord Andre for the murder and get on with your life. Cheers.
aww crap I just grassed him up this morning, I'm only lv 1 this is my first ever play through :(
What I did was tip Sarah off about the worthless prick, turned him in to Andre, went to visit him..Then took the prick out before he could hurt my beloved Sarah!...;^) And I did this in both scenarios. One, in doing him a favor before I entered the town, and Secondly, by meeting him in the town. Either way Canthar's worm food!

Almak: Wow! So this being my first playthrough of Gothic 2 I was aware that the game throws in a couple of "screw you" quests just to mess with you and see if you understand the world (from playing Gothic 1 I learned it the hard way) but what I was not prepared for is that guy Canthar. I didn't fall for his scam selling me a city pass but later on when he asked me to blackmail Sarah I refused and when he threatened me I just dismissed it (big mistake). Another mistake I made was not pushing the issue further and taking it up with either Sarah or the militia. So now the scrawny bastard is blackmailing me for 500 gold (which I dont have being just a level 3 as I am) and of course no merchant of worth is selling me anything since they found out about my past. Further infuriating is when I did a little search on the quest was me finding out that I missed my chance for payback with the guy and now I'm just going to have to bite the bullet and come up with the money.
What can I say I suppose I got mine. But I'm definitely coming back for the guy once I'll train up to actually do anything worth a damn. I have a fireball with his name on it.
Tough chore - he's too public. Probably sleeps in the inn, though. You might be able to off him without being seen but it'll be tough. Perhaps just before leaving Korinis for the last time when you probably don't care if you are seen.

EDIT: Must be half asleep as this is an old thread that I participated in. Guess you're way past this by now.

He did that to me too (actually,i accepted the job and then sold him out to the militia), i just loaded an older save, checked a walkthrough, and found out that there IS a way to screw the bastard over:
- accept to help Canthar
- immediately go to the Militia HQ and get him locked up.
- visit him in his cell, and kill him.
In my case the Guard was busy trying to kill my Will'o'Wisp (from Vatras amulet) and didn't notice me slaughtering the swine.

Keep multiple saves, and if you don't manage to beat Canthar just yet, just avoid getting close to him until you are confident, since there is a time limit to how long you can stall after he talks to you in town (2 game days).

Ha ha, I am on my first playthrough of Gothic 2 right now. I could kinda smell he was a slimy bastard, but I took him up on his offer for the city pass and promised to pay him back later. When he asked me to screw over Sarah, I followed through and planted the letter, but then went to the guards and ratted the slimy snake out. Hopefully it doesn't come back to bite me in the a** later!

Slowpoke here!
I actually arranged a pretty nice murder of Canthar without any negative consequences for our hero.

Once Canthar is in jail for trying to frame other merchant, you should go there with bow and shoot a couple of arrows through bars (it takes several attempts). Canthar draws his sword and tries to attack you, but, for some reason, prison guard will think that it's Canthar who's initiating a battle and will target him. At this point, you should open jail door and wait until stupid pathfinding will figure out how to get prison guard inside the cell. Sit back, relax and enjoy the fight.

Once the fight is over, DON'T LOOT CANTHAR or pick up his weapons. Just wait until guard finishes looting him and returns back to his post. At this point, you're alone with Canthar, who has 1 HP. Draw that sword and kill the bastard (+300 EXP). Guard's vision is obscured by the wall, so he doesn't get aggroed on you.

Voila, Canthar is dead, you got some precious EXP, dealt with future troubles and used nameless poor bastard to do you dirty work. Ideal murder.
