So I discovered that if you press Esc while holding an item in the menu, the item vanishes. It doesn't drop it on the ground and it doesn't return it to its spawn location. Well, this happened with a key item and now I cannot progress. Anyone have any solutions?

Sadly all you can do is load an old save to my knowledge.
