well i was facing this down for a little bit today, kept noticing my codecs appearing during each failure.
so i finnaly uninstalled them, and bam worked like a charm and the game started up perfectly fine.

codecs are used for audio and video files, incase anyone doesnt know what they are.
the codec pack i was using was a k-lite codec pack.

hopefully this solution helps some out who cant get it running ^w^

Don't know why but my game initially worked well but later on crash on initial logo (maybe some installations or uninstallations).

I tried your solution uninstalling the K-lite codec pack and the game immediately get fixed and even seeing all videos.

none of the "solutions" worked in my case so i googled and some links pointed to steam and the users talked about dgVoodoo2, so i visited the sites and downlaoded the files.

Sofar (knock on wood) i dont have the layers that overlap another and the graphics will be 'destroyed' / 'obscured'
i use the sgVoodoo 2 2.53 now.
It seems there is already an old topic about dgVoodoo 2 , it seems to have lots of false flags ( malware related)
and that might be true cause i downlaoded the files checked the hashes online and the ones falseflagging were all the lesser known AV, and some bad av like norton and clam.

Anyway my kasperky and malwarebytes said everything is okay and i have to rely on that, cause i cant check every file 24/7 online...
