Do you have to uninstall the old version or can you just install over it and are saved games preserved ?

I have uninstalled the old version, I was asked whether to keep savegames or not. I kept them and after installing the new version the savegames were recognized without a problem

Edit1: Well that didn't turn out so well :-(

I uninstalled it, it asked to keep save games, I did, installed game, no saves.

Edit2: Luckily I saved the old savegames file to a memory stick, reinstalled it and save games are back. :-)
