In the main menu I can't navigate. The mouse cursor flickers sometimes when I move it, but most of the time it's invisible. I can't click on anything. I also can't use the up and down arrow keys. "Start New Game" keeps being highlighted, or is highlighted again in an instant.

The game starts in windowed mode and seems to be displayed in my primary screen's native resolution (1920 by 1080 px). It switches to fullscreen when I hit Alt+Enter, and my secondary and tertiary screen are going into stand-by mode. I tried with deactivated additional monitors, and with an xbox 360 controller plugged in and disconnected, but never could navigate in the main menu.

One time I managed to get to the options section where I could change the resolution, but the highlight kept crawling up without me doing anything and when I tried to scroll up and down with the arrow keys, the gamepad or the scrolling wheel it was nothing more than erratic.

I tried several times, and the most I could do was to provoke a freeze of the game. Even hitting enter when Start New Game was highlighted did nothing more than make the mouse cursor flashing. While holding the enter key I moved the flashing and now visible mouse cursor around and sometimes hit another menu item, but was able to open up let's say "options" only once in a while. Navigating there again was impossible.

My system is an AMD Phenom II X6 1055T, with an R9 280 3GB (former known as HD 7950 boost) running Win 7 64.

We are terribly sorry for your inconvenience.
Maybe you have to clean your preferences from the previous versions of the game:
remove any entry in regedit for "Ghost of a tale",
or simply create a .cmd text file with the content:
reg delete "HKCU\SOFTWARE\SeithCG\Ghost of a Tale" /f
double click on it and then run the game.
I never installed the game before, but I'll give it a try anyways.

EDIT
I ran this regedit command through Win+R and tried again. No change.

So, I fixed the problem for me. After I had the same problem with another Unity-based game (ICARUS.1) I knew I found this page:

http://answers.unity3d.com/questions/1254780/all-unity-engine-games-controls-not-working.html

I disabled said HID and without restarting the system I could start, navigate and play both games.

I had the same problems, this worked for me, tnx!
Just open the device manager and disable (right click -> disable) the device "HID-Compliant game controller".
