I still have this problem. Starting steam first doesn't help, as PSN is also affected this has to be something with gog, not steam.
Restarting the gog client now did help though. Don't know if it will update when friends go online/offline yet.

update: The friends list doesn't update, I have to restart the gog client to get an updated list.

+1, I am also having this issue.
I am having the same issue as well.
I think I found a solution for Steam at least

1. Completely close GOG Galaxy
2. Go in the %localappdata%\GOG.com\Galaxy\plugins\installed\ folder
3. Open the .ini file steam_plugin_config.ini
4. At the bottom add this:

[BackendMode]
initial = steam_network
fallback = none

5. Save changes and open GOG Galaxy again

Maybe, if it doesn't work, try also disconnecting and reconnecting to the integration.

What does this do?
The integrations has two backends: Steam Network and Public Profiles. the Steam Network backend is the only one that also supports friends presence. (1) What this does is forcing the integrations to only use Steam Network and not fall back to the other backend. I haven't tested this much but it worked for me instantly.

This worked exactly as intended thanks. Upon further inspection of file, apparently we were supposed to do that all along as it gives the example in file and is not done automatically for some reason. Good work
