It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

fr3db0b: FYI: If you time it right, you can force close the 'old' app once it black-screens, while the updater is running, and the auto update will complete. Slightly easier than just doing the manual update.
This works for me too.
Please, please, please, fix this. It has gone on for far too long.
I don't see how this bug, which was reported nearly a year ago, is still not fixed.

It's not just that the app won't close (which is annoying but there's a work around), but you can't even install an update because the updater can't close the app.

Well, and same issue on the new macOS Sequoia too.

I sent a bug report to GoG, informing them that I go with Steam games as long as this is not fixed.

This is now a No Buy for me.

Just use the web site like before Galaxy was made

That's a workaround, not the solution.

Moreover applying patches time and time again, not for me. I did this in the past, I am happy with the 'good launchers' like Steam.

It is not because the 'old' way still exists that this should prevent the devs from fixing issues like this one. This just prevents quality of life improvements to be effective.

Lebostein: @gog: please fix this!
Agreed!

This simply isn't working. It's effectively useless.
I'm on Macos Sonoma and today just manually updated GoG Galaxy app. I was hoping that after over a year of the GoG Galaxy app only going away if I "force quit" it would finally be fixed. It's still broken like this. Feels crazy that this is still broken.
Still broken. Glad but also sad that I'm not the only one with this issue. C'mon, GOG, get it together.

kulhy: Please don't take me wrong. I am a longtime fan of GoG, but how, HOW is it possible that the Galaxy team doesn't set this bug a major priority? How could you as a product owner excuse this is not fixed already? Your app isn't quitting and minimizing (essential functionality) properly on modern OS for almost 2 years already. Please. Please. Please.
couldn't afree more...
Had this bug for an eternity, just removed Galaxy and installing the game the old way - it's inconvenient the least...

Yeah I'll do the same... especially as I recently discovered that GOG Galaxy is Chromium-based.
What I've started doing is that every time GOG asks me to fill in a survey, I write in there:

"the GOG Galaxy app won't quit properly on Mac OS. Please fix it."

At this point, it won't get fixed unless someone makes it a priority. Might be a quick fix, but it won't get assigned to anyone to be fixed unless we make noise.

The project managers aren't reading these forums, but perhaps if there's enough feedback, they'll get the message "hey, we keep getting feedback about GOG Galaxy not quitting properly, can you look at that?"
