Another german user here.
Clearing the gog,psn, rockstar, user folders inside C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\webcache\ (number-which-is-probably-the-user-id) and using a US VPN with the Hide.me app worked for me.
Took a little time to load the images though.

I wish GOG could get their shit together but I'm not holding my breath.
I used to be a huge fan of this site like many others and I'm still thankful to have the chance to support bringing back treasures from the past as well as DRM free modern games.
I can't help but feel like GOG kinda turned into the Microsoft of digital game platforms, at least regarding galaxy which seems to lay abandoned in it's laggy, buggy and unpleasant state.

I much preferred Minigalaxy while testing Ubuntu for a few days.

I tried the 48design-script but it didn't work because I have not 0-byte but MISSING "vertical_cover" files. I wanted to modify the script but I need the hash-code in the filename, to download the correct file.

I could get the name from the gog.com Website but could'nt find any place where these verical covers are used.

I could fix 3 out of mf my about 30 missing covers but hiding the games (the use undo), clicking every option in the context-click menu but it was never reproducible...

Since today all missing cover graphics are fixed.
