In the previous galaxy version I could launch my games from my start menu / shortcut with out galaxy. Now when I do this Galaxy opens first. Is this DRM or am I misunderstanding the term?

I can't get it to notify me of my thread responses either. I have to pin it to the UI and check it occasionally.

Just checked a backup and found that this has been the case since at least the December 2019 Galaxy 2.0 update (furthest back update I had in my backup timeline).

I had no idea though that Galaxy was doing this, it's honestly surprising coming from GOG, seeing as the client is entirely unnecessary to launch the game. I always launch games via custom shortcuts rather than ones from the Start menu so hadn't noticed this behavior.

So you're saying this is behavior new to Galaxy v2?

Wouldn't call it DRM though seeing as one can create direct custom shortcuts to the game (as I've always done) but would be curious to know more.

Ah so if I launch from the folder I can bypass galaxy. I will try this if galaxy goes down in the future which would be the only thing to concern me. If they keep the updates coming and it gets the UI better this may work out just fine. I will see.
I don't install through the client, I just use the installers. But I looked it up, installed a game through Galaxy and it launched Galaxy when I started the game.
It's just a shortcut linking to the Galaxy client with a launch option telling it to launch a specific game. But still, this should be an option when you install a game.

Agreed. That way Galaxy can stay closed while we launch games.
Technically no, it's not DRM. I've noticed this trend too. They're simply prioritising the use of Galaxy. You can still download the games without Galaxy and you can also teak them once installed via Galaxy to not depend on it and launch without it.

That way you get the convenience of cloud saves, automatic updates, library cataloguing but you don't get the DRM and the "always online" requirements.
