Hello everyone.

I feel that the genre filter uses an archaic system to define games that is for the most part, useless. It can't be relied upon to find or group similar games together, it's not robust enough.

I would like to suggest that this system should be completely overhauled and would like to point at the Mobygames database for an example of how to do this right.

If we take a look at Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on Mobygames, the game is defined as follows:

Genre
Action

Perspective
1st-person

Gameplay
Shooter

Interface
Direct control

Setting
Asia, Cold War, Europe

This system is uniform across the entire mobygames database.

This in my opinion is informative, actionable information, whereas the current system on GOG Galaxy is not. If I wanted to find all first person games using GOG galaxy, theres no current way to do so.

I could find and group all shooters together for example using GOG galaxy, but the resulting list groups the following together.
Call of Duty: Cold War
Megaman X
Raiden 5
Vanquish
Princess Remedy

So here we have a mix of first person shooters, platformers, vertical scrollers, 3rd person shooters, top down shooters, and more. All of which are entirely different styles of game. It has also missed several games.

I genuinely think we can do more and would implore the staff working on GOG Galaxy to please explore the options.

I would also like to ask if there was a way to import the mobygames database to GOG Galaxy as a system of tags?
I think that GOG Galaxy has an opportunity to shine in this area.
