Zjeraar: Supaplex. The perfect blend of puzzle-solving and action. Spend hours back in the days making complex custom levels.
Supaplex is free and working on modern computers? Would you kindly point me in that direction?

Oh, and my favorite is Quake Live. They just don't do them like that any more.

Whiteblade999: Battle for Wesnoth. It scratches that SRPG itch I have had ever since Final Fantasy Tactics got old after beating it a dozen times.

TheEnigmaticT: For me Battle for Wesnoth is like being beat in the face by a large plank with nails driven in it. On any difficulty level above "drooling idiot" I get roundly trounced.
Oh my god, don't even mention that. "Attack the enemy"
My guy: *miss*
enemy: *hit*
my guy: *miss*
enemy: *hit*

I fricking hate random-based battle system in my strategy games

Yes, the game's free and with the emulator DOSBox you should be able to get the game working. If you just want it to run without too much hassle then I suggest downloading MegaPlex, which can be run on Windows platforms. MegaPlex however offers you a somewhat different game play experience as it gives you a whole overview of each level in a small window, which means you'll be playing with a very tiny Murphy.

When downloading Supaplex, be aware that there's also a "speed-fix" that fixes the speed issues that the original game was having on increasingly faster computers. While that of course is an improvement, the people behind the speed-fix messed up the demos (and added version info to the credits screen). If you're a purist -- like I am -- you may not like that.

You can read about it and download Supaplex (both the original and the altered version) and MegaPlex from here.

MsbS: Blocksum - an absolutely brilliant game that does not get the love it fuly deserves.
You get +1. Blocksum is stupidly awesome, and yet I've never heard anyone mention it besides me.

I'm not a big fan of brickwell games in general, but Blocksum owns.

Some of my freeware favorites:

Deadly Rooms of Death - a maliciously hard old-school turn-based puzzle game. A bit like Paganitzu or Adventures of Lolo on steroids. I've been working on the original campaign for ages, and I'm still not quite finished yet. Enormous fun for puzzle fans.

Digital: A Love Story - one of the most refreshing adventure games I've played in some time. Though it's sometimes a bit twee, and the nostalgic presentation is mainly targeted at those of us who crawled bulletin boards back in the day, it's a thoughtful and bittersweet story that should be relatable for anyone who's ever found a friend online.

And since I think the OP was gearing this thread towards MMOs, I'll just throw Vindictus out there (currently open to North America only, I think). It's repetitive and I'm not sure if it's got what it takes to be a long-term favorite, but for now, I'm having more fun than I thought was actually possible in an MMO (although technically it's more of a multiplayer action game with a persistent player hub).

My all-time favorite MMO, Everquest 2, also has a new free-to-play version, but I'm not sure if that counts.

Thanks for the info. I found the combiantion of the "speed-fix" + DOSBox to work as the best solution.
You made my dad a very happy person as we played it together some 15 years ago.

World of Tanks, depiste its many shorcomings, is a good game, and has the potential to be an outstanding game when it is out of beta.

Note that if you have poor luck at Battle for Wesnoth, WoT is not for you. Example :

Player shoots T-34
Gunner :"It did not penetrate the armor"
T-34 shoots on player's Panther
Tank Commander : "The tracks are destroyed. We are immobilised"
Player shoots T-34
Gunner : "Ricochet"
T-34 shoots player
Tank Commander "The main gun is hit. We cannot fire anymore
Unseen artillery / tank destroyer shoots player
Tank Commander "The engine is hit, the tank is on fire !"
...
The driver is dead
The gunner is dead
The tank commander is dead
The reloader is dead
The radioman is dead

You know what's pretty underrated and ignored? La Mulana. It's long and mega fun, but the puzzles are devious. I have yet to complete it.

Come to think of it, I don't believe I beat FF:T either. There may be a pattern forming here...

Oh, and my favorite free to play game is Minecraft. That's still free to play even though Notch has entered beta, right?

[[Edited to add, well, relevance]]
Use a very small force and rush them to a higher level while making sure not to lose a soldier that matters. Soon you will have a small squad that can handle most of the challenges in the game and help raise other soldiers without relying on RNG. It isn't a game for everyone that is for sure.
Nethack, NetHack is amazing fun.
