Gazoinks: Is there any particular reason to use it over the Grim Fandango installer/launcher combo?
The launcher/installer relies on hacks to try and run aged code. It's not portable and it's not sustainable. With things like that you'll eventually hit a wall and they won't work anymore; walls in the form of OS upgrades, hardware changes etc.

Residual is a complete code rewrite of the Grim Fandango engine. It is open source and thus portable, you can run this natively on Linux and various other platforms (ScummVM runs on the damn Nintendo 64 for goodness sake!). It is sustainable as the code can be updated over time.

Furthermore, Residual will soon support other games and engines. Research work on Escape from Monkey Island is coming along swiftly and Residual will have support for it in a year or two. Support for Myst 3 will be in Residual in a matter of months.

Just think of Residual as a new version of GRIM.EXE that somehow fixes every problem you ever had with it, instead of relying on hacks that will eventually stop working.
