I've got the very new 250GB Xbox 360 S (the gloss black Kinect ready one) and have found that the disc drive is really excited about something, it just doesn't want to sit still!

Notably, when trying to save in Dead Rising I hear the "bing" and the drive opens. Return to dashboard. Then it closes and opens and closes and opens and closes and opens and closes and opens and closes and opens and closes and opens and closes and opens even after it's been turned off. The only way to stop it is to take the power lead out, plug it back in. Then when I save in Dead Rising once more, the disc drive decides to go again.

Is this a known problem? Are there any possible fixes for it?

Wtf, my S does not do that (I guess I could pop in Dead Rising to make sure). Make sure you don't have a cord or anything near that drive open button (maybe a headset or controller power cable), it seems to respond even to a brush of a finger past it.

Also, you could always install the game to reduce disc accesses. I don't know about Dead Rising but it helps a lot with games that read like crazy from disc, like Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise.

I'd take my XBox back, honestly, as defective. Just back up your game saves first. You might call XBox Support but honestly first level support is worthless.
It's not just Dead Rising, even when I'm using Media Centre it'll just start going, or maybe when I'm playing an Arcade game or something.

That's defective. Something inside must be tripping the sensor. Take it back or warranty it to MS (they pay shipping both ways). If you warranty it make sure to not send your hard drive, you won't get it back (and they tell you not to, anyway).
Yeah thats a definite defect
Well, simply turning it on its side prevented it. It now has its own shelf and it's no longer opening all the time. Weird.
Thats definitely a weird one, maybe something is placed slightly off and shifts to just the right spot for not triggering the sensor
