Fesin: Do you have any idea what I actually wrote?
I know what you wrote yes.
Fesin: she was probably as destructive to the world as Stalin
Convenient of you to ignore that when you replied to me. And that statement is frankly laughable.
As for Thatcher having a huge impact on the world, as I said, the world is not the UK, or even Europe.
There are lots of foreign leaders who admired her and what she did, but mostly in countries where what happened in the UK (i.e. getting rid of much of the nonprofitable industry and refocusing the economy on services, slashing social benefits) had already happened before.
In France, for instance, she had zero effect on politics except as yet another right-wing figure to hate. Well, there was a very short amount of time when a right-wing PM tried Tachterite policies, but there was such a public outcry it lasted less than a year, and any reform was promptly undone by the next left-wing government.
The point is that outside of the UK, what's happened economically since the 80s in the world would have happened even if there had been no Thatcher. There were plenty of other people who had the same ideas, Reagan included, and furthermore, globalisation and desindustrialization in the West are economic trends that didn't need politicians to happen.
But as I said, this thread is supposed to be about Roger Ebert. I couldn't help myself from replaying to you, but I won't derail the thread any longer.
