I hate "popcorn" comments. They bring to my mind images of sloth and gluttony, of people standing idly, waiting for you to slip just so they can cackle at your misfortune.
Indeed, in this case it's probably just a carefree comment that I stumbled upon... But I still don't think this should be taken too lightly.
Yes, I am an evil bastard who waits and preys upon random people, hoping they fuck up so I can laugh at them and their stupid face.

Then when I'm done laughing at them, I MURDER them, chop them up, bag them up, and bury them. That is how evil I am. Yep.

Or, I make a dumb little comment because I found a flame war amusing, and you got your panties in a bunch.

I can testify to this fact! I'm not half the man I was Yesterday! ;-P
Truthfully, in life, I believe that sometimes the best way to stop people from having an 'irrational attack' (for lack of a better word) is to crack a joke. This can take them out of their current emotional temperment and maybe help them to change thinking gears, and cool off a little. Who knows, worth a shot. Of course those two may have just been having fun with one another to begin with, or at least one of them.
