Boone+Rez

One melee, one long
If you want a companion that kills everything for you then Boone is your man. He's the clear winner as far as companions that help you beat the game.

If you want personality then I loved both Cass and Veronica, they are both extremely well written female characters with distinct personalities. Veronica has the added awesomeness of being in the Brotherhood of Steel and giving a lot of lore to you in conversation.

I never used Lilly or Arcade, sadly. I plan to on my next playthrough.
As far as killing things Boone is the winner. There's times where you won't even see what Boone's murdered before it's dead. It's pretty refreshing considering how dumb Fallout 3's NPC's were. On Hardcore mode, Boone is never in any danger at all unless things go all to hell.

The downside to Boone is he makes the Legion hostile. You can't cooperate with the Legion whatsoever with Boone.

Personality wise, Veronica wins. She's voiced by Felicia Day who clearly had a ball with the process. There's lines, quips, and personality everywhere with Veronica. The downside to Veronica is she's a melee attacker and my experience is that she's weak. If you kit her out correctly, I can see her being stronger but there's a better melee companion you can pick up named Lily. She's just further out of the way then Veronica is.

Cass is like a more annoying, less effective Boone. Where as Boone is silent and strong in the wake of his past, Cass feels the need to complain constantly. She got on my neeeeeerves quick.

On the robot front, I prefer ED-E over Rex. ED-E's surprisingly tough, and the little thing knows to stay out of danger. I haven't had any problems with Rex, but he gives me flash backs to FO3 and having to micromanage Dogmeat at every turn.

I've never picked up Raul or Arcade. Raul is pretty far out of the way. You have to skirt by the Quarry area with Deathclaws and go into a Super Mutant base to find him. It's not exactly a walk in the park. Arcade on the other hand you can pick up pretty quickly at Freeside if you pass skill checks, or have a low enough intelligence. I've just never bothered with him.

If you play on Non-Hardcore, any NPC is useful. If they fall in battle they'll just get back up when it's over ala Origins. But on Hardcore mode you'll need companions that won't die to one Cazador. So Boone + ED-E is my recommendation. They'll keep you alive for a long time.

Boone died on me when we decided to raid the Legion's main base and kill Caesar. He made it all the way to Caesar's tent and then died when those half-dozen guys with souped-up power-fists ran at us. Until that point though, for a good 50 hours, Boone was a superman companion who slaughtered everything and never complained. We had a lot of fun killing legion members together.

When he died I got Cass for the endgame and she died in the dam at the end. I actually re-loaded for her though, as I wanted to see at least one companion ending.

In subsequent games I have played on not-hardcore mode so Veronic and Raul were invincible! What a marvel of modern science.

prakaa: Oh man spoiler...
All I said was you can kill Caesar, which you can kill anyone in the game, and that there is a battle at the dam, which is common sense.

Well, the fact you could kill him if you wanted to is not a spoiler. You can kill every single NPC in the game except two of them, and naming those two would be an actual spoiler.
Playing in hardcore mode, Raul and ED-E were the most useful companions to me. Boone kills everybody but has a faction problem. Raul keeps your armory in a little better shape due to his maintenance perk. And ED-E is not as easily killed as Rex and makes a good walking container.
I'm actually kinda pissed with the game now... Never once has a PS3 game froze on me & this make the 3rd gotdamn time that it has within' a few hours. I thought they patched this piece of shit.
