Oh, wow. I know exactly what the problem is.
A stereotype had developed into a notion, the notion was used as a mental short-hand (to conjure relevant connotations) by some guy... and people were outraged by the demeaning nature of the denotation... which was likely never intended for consideration in the first place.
That 's like person A saying that person C is dressed like Santa Claus and person B sternly reminding him that Santa Claus doesn't exist and therefore no one can be dressed like him.
Nonsense - you can be dressed as Santa without him existing; you can have girlfriend mode without girlfriends needing it. As long as we are not labeling any particular person with this nor claiming that such people exist, this notion merely lives in the confines of our minds. It constitutes an archetype, a figure of speech, a generalized idea that only those foolish or whimsical would dare apply to reality.
Oh - as for "white knights" and "fanboys" - I dislike the terms, as they are often used against those who try to bring sanity and respect back into discussions. I loathe the idea that the proper approach to anything should be either apathy or hatred.
Of course - if there are people who blow things out of proportions and see harm and malice where there is none, I would consider them silly... though their hearts are in the right place, at the very least. Selflessness is a noble thing, you know.
