From my understanding the game is a classic, and I've been wanting to play it for years. I'm surprised it's not on GOG.

Anybody know why, or if GOG has plans to acquire it?

Short answer: It's in LucasArts's vault and they're dicks.

Long answer: Licensing games is a long procedure, a deal has to be struck with the rights owner. Sometimes the rights owners don't show any interest in making a deal. Because they're dicks.

The game is a classic though and one of the most beautifully designed and written adventure games I've ever played.

If anything, the reply could be shortened further to 'because it's LucasArts,' since by now it ought to be presumed that they are dicks.
