It's considered to be a spiritual successor of the Gothic series.

Pretty sure it's on GOG. I think it also has a sequel... with more pirates in it and it's not as good....

Two Worlds ?

Edit : the pirate thing doesn't ring any bell though.

YES YES. That was the name.
You are talking about the Risen series.
The first one was ok once you get used to it. I must have played the first part quite a few times over the years but I always gave up quite quick because it didn't seem to appeal to me. Then one time it just clicked and I got a bit further and found I actually enjoyed it.

I've never got very far in the second one though. Maybe one day I will but from reading reviews I doubt it. It's a shame because I like pirate games in general.

Have you played the first two Gothic titles? When I played Risen 1 I thought it felt like a game for fans of Gothic. Risen 2 did not appeal to me nearly as much.

Nah I've never played them. Always been meaning to but I think I remember people complaining about the controls and some buggyness so that put me off. Now might be a very good time to finally buy them...

The controls are not bad, but they are different and thus they might be hard to get into (at least I struggled a bit early on). And Gothic 1 & 2 are not super buggy. It's Gothic 3 that is the problem, but that one has a large fan-patch that solves move of the major ones.
