Remember about a year ago there was a YouTube/Machinima series about Mortal Kombat (it was produced in partnership with Machinima and put up on their Channel, but wasn't actually machinima)? Was there ever meant to be more than that first series? Or was it just meant to showcase each character's origin? Was the first series a prelude to a more interconnected second series? Or did the guy run out of money having spent it all on the Hydro/Cyrax/Sektor episode and the Kano props?

If money's the problem, I'll bet you SyFy would pick up the series.
After brilliant trailer the series turned out to not be as good as expected to put it lightly. They've killed a lot of potential there.
Last I heard, he got the green light for the movie he was propositioning from the beginning.

Considering how bad Annihilation was this was a pretty good try, more so considering all the limitations.

Please leave Sharktopus and such nonsense to SyFy as that's their absolute best they can muster.

Some of the TV shows are good. It's the 'original made-for-tv movies' that bite big wind. It's like they're showcasing every film school amateur out of Full Sail.
It was use to hype the game and then probably died lonely in the corner.

To answer the OP:

I picked this up on Blu-Ray to show support for a movie. Has some really good special features.

I think some people were just put off that he had to use some of the original story pieces (Outworld) rather than doing a full realistic interpretation that was shown in his original proposal trailer (The one with Jax and Scorpion in the interrogation room). People expected one way, it went another. Most places I visited normally hated on the more mystical episodes (Kitana/Mileena) and claimed he was forced to not stray from the original material but overall there were a few good ideas in these shorts.

I will admit to wishing he dropped one or two segments to move the money to the Sub-Zero/Scorpion episodes.
I think the success of the last game probably killed it in the end. The series was flagging, had become a bit of a joke after the DC universe stuff, but that short film and game came out around each other. With the game being as big as it was I imagine anything similar to his fan film will not get made. The planned reboot will probably end up being close to the games, whether the press says it's going to be "gritty' or not.
I didn't ask where current episodes are now, in fact I stated where they are in the OP. I asked what's happening in the future of the series.
Speaking of the devil, Season 2

Aha! That's what I wanted to know. Big tip!

Exactly.

hmmm.... I also experienced lot of hate from the other side, especially from MK kids that wanted something more power rangers like.

But even for a fantasy series the script and action sequences seemed kind of bad. Better to rewatch the good old cheesy Konquest series.
Ok I admit the first time I stopped watching in the middle. This time I watched the whole thing.

The best episode is the one about Raiden, becouse it kind of took up the ideas of rebirth. The only question remained why did he wait so much to escape the asylum the way he did?

The Kitana / Mileena episodes were indeed the worst - not so much becouse of the fantasy, but the actual filming. Enough to mention the really bad animated sequences (inspired by Kill Bill?) screaming "we don't have money for this episodes!". And bland characters, I mean compare the shao kahn to the one in Konquest, both cheesy, but the second had definately much more character. ANd the props - what's with that silly delicate paper fans? The one in Konquest had actual BLADES, and that makes sense.

The first two episodes suffer from bad slowmos. The cyrax / sektor cgi was pretty bad. And the scorpion actor screwed up japanese accent. The make up and costumes are a real let down (quan chi looked fine though, deadly alliance style) – again the aimed-at-teens Konquest was better in this department (or MK4 intro).

All in all a lot of cheesiness. Game FMV quality. Except for the Raiden episode - the more "realistic" approach works better with a lower budget.

Still I had some laugh and as an MK fan I'll probably watch the second season. It's free anyways.

Probably because taking mortal form blocked some of his powers and memories until the doc 'lobotomized' him.
