A race of force-immune aliens from another galaxy called the yuuzhan vong, the jedi would have been useless as would the crappy republic army so palpie overthrew the republic and built the empire military to fight them. Then skywalker went and ruined it all, he would have gotten away with it if it weren't for that meddling kid...

Basically it was a huge retconn but kind of interesting to think of palpie as an evil good guy

Ah cheers! I heard about the alien invasion but didn't realise that they had link Palpatine to it. Though I haven't them yet (only read the Timothy Zahn ones with Thrawn in them and the Truce at Bakura one) the EU sounds so much better that I think the writers would do a better job at the movies than Lucas would. They can't do any worse than the new prequel ones anyway...
