I just checked it out and added it to my wishlist. Seems awesome and very creative.

It is, sadly , the most underrated game ever made. Just read it's wikipedia page:

dkclemons1: Well, it looks like Painkiller is winning. I'll get Painkiller for now.
This seems like a good opportunity to link to Yahtzee's review of Painkiller.

Zero Punctuation: Painkiller

DProject: I haven't played the original Deus Ex, but I have a butt feeling it might be hard to get into without any nostalgia (feel free to lynch me if I'm wrong).
I'd disagree with that notion. I played it for the first time a scant few months ago, and loved it. I was running with the HD Texture Pack and New Vision, though. Much easier on the eyes. Instructions on applying those for the interested.

dkclemons1: I also just beat Deus Ex: HR, and I ended it kind of frustrated. The game encouraged stealth so I my build was focused on that and then I got raped during boss fights, which was annoying.
While I haven't played DE:HR, I can tell you that the original DE only had 2 bosses you were required to actually fight and kill. One has a hidden condition that lets you defeat the boss without fighting, and the other... has a tendency to end the fight without your help, even if you're built for fighting. All other bosses you can deal with in other ways, or simply run away from.
To add another vote for Deus Ex: the original might fix some of your issues with how stealth is handled in Human Revolution. There are two people that you are required to kill in the entire game, and you can do that through stealth I believe. But basically you really aren't required to play one way, and it is a really bad idea to only play guns blazing type in Deus Ex, whereas in Human Revolution it is definitely more possible to go that route.

DProject mentioned that it might be difficult to get into the game because a lot of the liking of it is based on nostalgia. For me, it isn't. Well at this point it is a couple year old nostalgia, but I didn't play it when it first came out and I still found the story gripping and interesting; and the game play, while old school and a bit clunky, still works well I think.

I read the part that said it was overshadowed by Black and White and got sad :(

This is true. I never understood how such a thoroughly magnificent game could be such a commercial failure. I can only assume that the game suffered from a severe lack of marketing.

I always assumed it's because people are too stupid :P
Well, I've gotten through all the parts of the first level in Painkiller. FPS heavy is right. The weapons are great (so far) and it's fun to have a little mindless shooting. I have to admit I'm slightly disappointed, though. It seems a little too simplistic to me. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you can't even crouch... Not that you'd need to, but I'm used to trying to take cover.

It's also been pretty easy so far, other than finding the secrets. I look all over the place and I can't find any of them. I guess I'll try guides for the secrets.

I looked at how much overtime I got and figured another ten bucks wouldn't hurt me. Deus Ex is now on my shelf as well. I got a mod to improve the graphics and fix some bugs, but that was it. Seems fun so far.

After playing both, I feel like Deus Ex may have been the better option for me. I started gaming on stealth games and RPGs so I guess I'm just a slow gamer. I don't feel like I wasted money, though. I'm definitely playing through Painkiller.

After you start a level, note what it will take to unlock the cards for that level. It keeps it very interesting. Some levels you can only use the stake gun, others the painkiller, another you can't take ANY damage... on one you have to collect ALL the souls, or ALL the money... its a nice change of pace to simply running and gunning.

There is no real cover mechanic. Think (serious sam) but in a more ambient setting ;)

Also, the secrets are incredibly well hidden. Even knowing their location is only have the battle.

If you don't like the rock music you can turn it off by setting the music volume to 0. This makes it much more enjoyable to me, but some love the music.
It's actually really growing on me. I've started trying to unlock all the cards, but I still can't find the secrets.
I've been playing it most of the day, in fact.
I love the music as well. Sometimes I want to change it to play my own music, though.
