This was one of the early games that made gOg a compelling place to get the classics. Unfortunately, some publisher / developer problems caused it to be yanked for, what, 2 years or so? Something like that. Anyway, this classic was removed from the catalog and it didn't get the love it deserved.

Fast forward to earlier this year - or maybe it was last year, no matter - and the game is re-released as ArmA: Cold War Assault. This coincided with the addition of ArmA Gold Edition to the catalog. So there it is: two games with fourteen squillion mods, maps, and add-ons, and you have suddenly enough gameplay for the next 5 years.

If you don't know about the game already, some will categorize this as an FPS, which, I suppose, it is, but it's also been more-accurately described as a military sim. There's no automatic healing-while-resting mechanic, run-and-gun will have you killed in moments, and the save game feature made you strategize over even that game function.

Huge open game worlds, no set way to approach even given scenario, large selection of weaponry and vehicles, squad tactics, it runs well on low-power hardware, and that aforementioned enormous collection of add-ons... total classic.

So here's Operation: Flaaaa... I mean, ArmA Cold War Assault

RBY2-WGW5-QWTG-QFP7

I know it's a free game and all that, but if it's going to languish on your game shelf, swapping war stories with the other unplayed games waiting to be installed, then please leave it for the next person who will install and actually play the title.
Thank you a thousand times. I snatched it up but for a good reason. When I was little kid, I played Operation Flashpoint a lot. Sure I died very often since realism in a war game wasnt something I grasped entirely and tried to...well...Rambo my way out of every conflict, but somehow I actually managed to get very far in the game.

During summer sale I picked up ARMA2 on steam...I admit it was mainly for DayZ, but when I tried it, I remembered how I enjoyed original Operation Flashpoint and planned on getting it in the next sale from GOG, and now thanks to you I can enjoy it right now. Thanks a lot man.
A little offtopic now, but I have a question. I am not really into TPP shooters BUT I've seen recently YT video for DayZ and I loved it. Question (I'm rather sure of the answer but asking about it doesnt hurt much): does DayZ require next part of this game and I wouldn't be able to play it using GOG's release?

@down: thanks, that's what I thought but I was only 99% sure of it. :)

+1 for the giveaway.

I still live in hope that some generous soul will eventually port the OF campaigns to the ArmA 2 engine, as the engines do have a lot of similarities. But I expect there'll be a lot of problems with copyright and all that...

DayZ needs ArmA 2, GOG sells ArmA 1.

To add, from the Steam Page:
Day Z Mod requires Arma II: Combined Operations which is made up of Arma II and Arma II: Operation Arrowhead

Which is rather weird, because from what I've been told, those are both standalone games.

To clearify, DayZ needs ArmA 2 Combined Operations (or atleast Operation Arrowhead)

I heard that you need just ARMA2 demo and Operation Arrowhead, but I am not entirely sure about that.
