Get Freespace 1+2, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Descent series, MDK and many more Interplay classics 50% off!

Whenever you take a trip down memory lane of PC gaming Interplay titles pop up sooner, rather than later. Why? Because their nostalgia-inducing catalog is peppered with all-time classics. Pick your poison: sci-fi simulators, platformers, RPGs, shooters, revolutionary genre-benders--it's all here! This week's [url=http://www.gog.com/promo/interplay_weekend_promo_010814]weekend promo brings you these unforgettable titles at a 50% off discount. Let's walk you through some of the Interplay Immortals:

It's only $4.99 for Freespace 2, undoubtedly one of the best space sims ever created, featuring action-packed missions, well-balanced flight model, and a gripping storyline with grueling plot twists. If you're feeling more adventurous, and want to experience an astonishing amalgamation of genres and mash-up of gameplay ideas look no further than Giants: Citizen Kabuto, available for just $4.99. Originally released in 2000, way ahead of its time, the game let's you delve deep into an all-out war between spacemen, mermaids, and giant monsters (seriously!) with each race dramatically changing the gameplay experience and strategic approach. Sacrifice, on the other hand, is a 3D real-time strategy game released before 3D real-time strategy games existed. Unlike the genre’s leaders at the time—the Command and Conquers and Warcrafts of the world—it took the bold step of letting the player control an individual character on the battlefield, and offered them the opportunity to play the game from an entrenched third-person perspective.

Navigate to the promo page, to see the entire selection of 30+ acclaimed Interplay Immortals, all available 50% off. The promo lasts until Tuesday, August 5, at 3:59AM GMT.

tammerwhisk: Despite my earlier gripe about the price, I feel compelled to ask: are there any must-haves in this promo? My friend speaks highly of Descent, but he has questionable tastes so I can't exactly take his word at face-value.
Descent is a first-person shooter of the old school, much like Doom. However, instead of being confined to the floor the levels are in true 3D with six degrees of freedom. You can move and rotate freely in any direction at any time and the game expects you to do it. The levels are maze-like tunnel systems that go in any direction, there is no notion of "up" or "down", it's crazy.

If you like old-school shooters chances you'll like it, but the 6DOF nature of the game means it's more complex to control. Really nothing a keyboard & mouse combo can't handle, but there is more to pay attention to. That's really the only "negative" part, it's more complex to control than Doom and it's derivatives. You need to move forward, backwards, strafe sideways, rise and sink, turn left & right, roll to the sides and rotate up and down. it can take a while, but once you get the grip on it it becomes second nature, and that's coming from someone who is not good at FPS games.

If you want to play it I strongly recommend using the DXX Rebirth port instead of the original DOS version. It has better performance, smoother graphics, smoother controls, more settings, support for high-resolution textures and all sorts of modern improvements while still keeping the game's original core intact.

HiPhish: *snip*
That DXX Rebirth port looks awesome. One of the reasons I haven't played through descent 2 yet is because I used to have the windows 95 version where I could use a joystick that used all the movement functions and I just can't go back to using the cumbersome keyboard. Also, there are still some movement keys which can't be used properly because it's just a pain getting your fingers where they need to be on the keyboard.

Has anyone had any issues with any joysticks using the DXX Rebirth port? Playing through Descent 1 with the keyboard was fine but DOSBox just doesn't cut it with joysticks and I really want to play descent 2 again with a joystick. The descent games were meant to be played with a joystick, not keyboard and mouse......
I will say...
...neh. Anyway, the only thing that i get are just "stones" in the head. And a lot of marks.
Nut why should i wander? This is the world that we are living. It's easier (and funny for some) to judge somebody, eveen when you know nothing about that person. Who cares why he's doing something| Let's judge him, make a little fun.... It's more easier.
Thank you for remembering me this lesson.

IwubCheeze: ...
Joystick woks perfectly in DXX Rebirth, at least on the Mac, but I don't see why it wouldn't on Windows and Linux. I have a Logitech Extreme 3D Pro stick and it works without any problems, all the buttons and axes get recognised immediately. Same thing for my mouse, keyboard or gamepad, so I can mix and match control devices as I please. I haven't even tried playing the DOS version, I went for DXX Rebirth right away.

Nice promo. I have all of them.
I've been looking forward to a Descent discount for a while now, but I can't give into Interplay when they're so stingy about this 50% discount. Hoping it will appear in a bundle in the winter sale in a few months.

EDIT: Oh, and R.I.P. Fallout :(
(I feel compelled to post something about this in every Interplay sale thread).

Just finished watching Totalbiscuit's video about Giants: Citizen Kabuto. It was intriguing... so I got the game ;D

Also, picked up Lionheart: Legacy of the Crusader.

time to try Invictus :)
Has anybody watched All Your History: Interplay? Here's the link to series on YouTube in 3 parts. It's sad that Interplay had become a shell of it's former self.

This is how the developers Blizzard (Now Activision-Blizzard), Bioware, Obsidian Entertainment, Volition, Stainless Games and Treyarch got their start from Interplay.

F4LL0UT: There's quite a few awesome games in this promo. As for Descent - very tough choice. The game IS great but nostalgia certainly comes into play. It's amazing for its true 3D levels but unless complex first person mazes give you a boner the game will probably frustrate you pretty fast.

Pretty much the must-haves from the promo:
Earthworm Jim 1+2
MDK 1+2
Sacrifice
FreeSpace 1+2
Giants: Citizen Kabuto

Giants is a decent and rather original action game that gets somewhat dull later on but the reason you wanna play it is that it's one of the most hilarious games ever made.

Thanks for the input!

Snagged Freespace 1+2 and the Descent games, the rest will have to wait until Interplay gets their head out of their ass on pricing (this may honestly be the least affordable promo I've seen on GOG).
I grabbed Battle Chess Special Edition. =)
I'm also very tempted to try Lionheart...
Lots of stuff I'm interested in, nothing I'm willing to buy at just 50% off given my already enormous backlog. Good promo anyway, for those with small collections.

kneekoo: An Interplay promo and we still don't have The Lost Vikings. :(

Man, I really miss that game. Will it ever show up in here or are they lost for good?

CorranHorn: As someone already mentioned it´s free to download and even though some levels seem to be missing (so far I´ve played 31 levels and I just started on the last world. The game runs without any problems on Windows 7, 64 bit. You can download it at the link given in a post above without an account.
I started playing the game on my Linux Mint 13 OS and it work just fine. :) Checking by the level codes I got so far everything's in order. But I only advanced about 10 levels or so. :)

Do you know which levels aren't there in the free package?
