Why do a lot of people in Northern Europe consider cold weather to be crappy weather? When there is hot weather(and humid), there are insects everywhere. Hot weather makes your computer overheat which is really bad for your computer. Hot weather is unhealthy. Hot weather is extremely uncomfortable and you have to spend a lot of money to make it comfortable because fans and air conditioning use a lot of electricity. In cold weather, if it gets too cold for your comfort, all you have to do is dress warm or eat something that makes you warm and voila your warm. OR drink some vodka. :P I understand people in Northern Europe who have a natural intolerance to cold weather(because they come from the middle east or south east asia etc) thinking cold weather is crappy, but why so many Northern Europeans bitching about it? And if these Northern Europeans dislike/hate cold weather, so much, then why don't they just move instead of taking vacations in hot places? I hate hot weather, and you don't see me living in a country in Africa or Thailand etc Is it a grass is greener on the other side kind of thing? Is it because many Northern Europeans don't really crave hot weather, but crave sunshine and find the lack of sunshine depressing? Is it trendy to bitch about cold weather? Maybe some people do it so they have an excuse to go on a vacation to a trendy location to look cool and rich?

yeah tis true some nordic peeps tend to whine about cold weather, however would you leave germany and go to some country just because of the weather leaving your friends, family and everything else behind, also depending on your education and such you might have to learn some other language more or less fluently etc so in the end it brings more trouble than it's worth. well anyways that's one viewpoint and only mine, i let the others speak for themselves :)

ps. you're welcome to visit finland next winter and see how you like it when it's -30-40 degrees celcius :p
its not subjective, actually sunshine really makes you happy, because of hormones and stuff

that doesnt mean that there are no people that like the lack of sunshine more, but the biology that is running your brain and stuff does influence some opinions

Finnish weather, no problem. Hesburger and Koskenkorva will prevent me from freezing to death. Yes, having to learn a new language is probably what prevents people from moving. It is truly a pain in the ass.

Yes, that is true. Sunshine makes you happy that is why I think it is possible that Northern Europeans bitch about cold weather because when there is cold weather, there is little sunshine and that can make you very depressed.

I've experienced a Finnish winter. Not drinking alcohol during a Finnish winter makes you a masochist. But aren't Finns, masochists? I mean, all that rolling around naked in the snow after being in the sauna and then running back to the sauna...sounds painful. Very healthy but painful...

i guess we are at least to some degree, lol and as for the rolling around in snow (pictures related 1 and 2), well what can i say, crazy people have crazy hobbies and such...iceage in the brain?
Yeah! I agree to the max. I don't like sunny days, and I'd rather have temperatures around +12C outside than over 20. Just a while ago, I was walking with a friend in some extremely sunny +26C pre-thunderstorm weather. We were both basically covered in sweat, he kept drinking from a water bottle and I kept getting closer and closer to being dehydrated, but he insisted that the weather is great. Then on cloudy/rainy days people complain that the weather is bad. I agree that the weather is bad if the streets are flooding from the rain, but usually enjoying rain is just a matter of not going out in an evening gown with sandals.

I think a lot of it has to do with preconceived notion that sunny is good while not sunny is bad, even if sunny means that you get blinded while driving etc. and many probably don't even give it a second thought.

As a personal bonus, I have problems with the sun. My eyes cannot handle bright lights all that well, and I have to wear sunglasses all the time when it's sunny or I'll get a massive headache. Sometimes I get it with sunglasses too. Sunniness also makes me keep my curtains closed.

Also, I don't drink alcohol, but enjoy the Finnish winter. I've bought actually functional winter gear, not just clothes that look pretty. :p

this, it's funny how some peeps simply want to look trendy/flashy/cool/whatever while they are literally freezing. personally i'd rather look like a michelin man with all the clothing than hear my frozen "family jewels" playing jingle bells in my pants :)
Here in england we love to see the sun because we don't see much of it at all, this spring/summer has been shocking in the UK with the wettest April to June on record and a very wet July, its been very dull with lots of overcast grey days.

We seem to be in a bubble because most countries in the northern hemisphere are enjoying a very warm summer but we seem to be stuck in atlantic type weather forever.

I love cold crisp days of winter so am looking forward to it but you lucky europeans on the continent will be enjoying cold and snow, we mostly have to put up with milder wetter weather, December 2010 was great here though which was one of the coldest Decembers on record if not the coldest in parts of the UK.

It's not trendy to bitch about cold weather, it's trendy to bitch about weather. It's either too hot or too cold. At least that's how I feel most of the time, I don't like either very much. If I'd have too choose between the two, I'd probably pick your side, but I think the best is moderately "good" weather: sunshine, blue sky, cool breeze, warm enough for t-shirts, without making you sweat.

... or maybe it's just trendy to bitch about anything, period. ;)

The weather here in ireland the past couple of weeks really has been bad

One hour it's raining like hell, the other the sun is shining, the other cold wind is blowing hard

I've recently talked to a friend in Ukraine, he's complaining that over there right now it's +30c

God I need to go somewhere on vacation so bad right now...
