Religion, denial, inflated feeling of worth within a vast universe...?

Take your pick. ;)

I don't think it's entirely wrong to say we come from monkeys.

Of course, not from the ones we see today, but if our ancestors where still around, I'm sure we'd call them monkeys.

It depends, the split was quite a long time ago and they looked a lot different then too (in fact, iirc we all looked a lot more like a sloth at the time, but that critter may have been further back before the split). The reason I nitpick about it is that it's a common thing for evolution deniers in the US to say "How come we don't see monkeys still evolving into humans, today? Evolution must be bunk!" It shows a fundamental misunderstanding of how evolution works. I do not know if the Narushima actually misunderstands evolution or just explained it poorly in their post but it's a pet peeve of mine, so I responded.

Also I find the idea that we're not animals silly. It both denies our true nature and fails to face the fact that we need to deal with things that made us very successful at reproducing in the past but may be a hindrance to us now that we have 6 billion more of us animals around (like our aggression, programming to eat as much carbs and fat as we can get our hands on, reasons we have sex, etc.).

Oh I don't think I have to pick, do I? That's a pretty good list to start with, I'm sure it could be expanded. I'd throw fear of death in there, as well, for sure.
