I would have posted this in the Duke Nukem boards, but I could also have easily posted it in the Blood boards, both being Build games.

Anyway, since GoG has every (popular) Build game and SW (there are a lot of others, like NAM and TekWar and the cancelled Corridor 8, but I reiterate, only the popular ones are here), I was going to buy it directly from 3DRealms.com. And since the expansion packs Twin Dragon (actually released for free at launch) and Wanton Destruction are both now freeware, now seems as good a time as any to get it. I actually had the CD-ROM version, but that disc is long lost to whatever dimension swallowed it up. I suspect the portal to that dimension is located in the same apartment where I last saw my Dreamcast.

The problem with the games sold directly from 3DRealms is that they're sold "as-is", meaning no handy-dandy wrappers like the kind GoG provides, and I'm not too handy, or patient, at setting up DOSBox settings for DOS games written in the Win95 era. And so I need to find a Windows 7 compatible source port. I'm aware of JonoF's port, but it hasn't been updated since October 2005, and I'm not sure if that's due to the fact that everything that can be done has been done, or if JonoF hasn't had any time to work on it in five years. I suspect the latter since "It is work in progress" is displayed in bold text at the top of the page.

I'm not looking for improved graphics or flashy lighting (though the ability to play at my native resolution of 1680x1050 is always nice), I'm just looking for a way to make the game functional on my OS.

JonoF's Shadow Warrior Port (JFSW) works well. Try setting the following compatibility options on swp.exe :
- disable desktop composition
- disable visual themes
- run as admin

Also the Shadow Warrior High-Resolution-Pack (HRP) is a nice addition.

There's also a high resolution texture pack like the high res for duke3d pack but for shadow warrior. It makes all the textures high res.

I think my edit and your reply were pretty much simultaneous :)

Hivemind......:)
The shadow warrior currently sold at 3drealms is bundled and pre-setup with dosbox. Just like some GOG.com games.

Are you positive about that? Have you bought this particular registered download?

I've seen the SW HRP. I'm less than impressed by the 3D models. The pack hasn't been worked on in three years apparently, since there's less demand for Shadow Warrior than there is for Duke Nukem.

I have it. (From when the new store opened)

Try SWP, its the most actively maintained port today, you can find it here: http://www.proasm.com/

It also has the freewared official addons (Twin Dragon & Wanton Destruction ) available on the site, and the HRP (High Resolution Pack), plus other maps, stuff etc... you can play around with.

Ok. I just wanted to be sure before I spent any money on it. I know $10USD doesn't seem like a lot on its own, but add it to utility payments, Internet access payments, cable television access payments, the rising cost of fossil fuels, etc., and it suddenly becomes as prominent as a crack on a porcelain doll's face. I quit smoking because a pack of cigarettes became as expensive as two gallons of gasoline!

@Spinvis
Thanks, it looks like that site has everything except the Redbook audio tracks that the CD-ROM version has. I'd like to get ahold of those and get them to play in the same manner that GoG.com gets Blood's Redbook tracks to play. How does that work, getting CD tracks to play in a DOSBox game without actually having the CD?

[EDIT]
It looks like ProAsm only has the HRP pack that hasn't been updated since 2007. That particular HRP hasn't got a lot in it (it's only 45MB, as opposed to Duke's HRP size of 400+MB), and the 3D models for the main fodder enemies, the Evil Ninjas (official name from 3D Realms), leave a lot to be desired. Like I said, I think the lack of progress on it stems from the lack of demand for it, as opposed to the demand for a Duke HRP, which is ALWAYS being update, models, sprites, music and all.
Uhm i think you are looking at the wrong HRP pack, cause the pack on ProAsm site is last updated 08/2009 and is 54 MB. Plus if you check in the forums you can get the latest textures, but you'll have to update manually, it's still a work-in-progress, slowly its getting there. Still waiting on ProAsm to release a full update, he said he would release a update in February earlier this year, i guess he is very busy irl.

The Ninjas are indeed a problem, the modeller forgot to add certain sequences to the animation, like the sliced up dying animation. I play the game with just with the textures, and 3d models disabled, still looks pretty good in SWP.

As for the CD audio in DOSBox, i don't play the game myself in DOSBox, but i guess you can create a bin + cue image and mount it with DOSBox in order to play the music.
