NoNewTaleToTell: Just as we grow old each passing moment so do our favorite video games. There are games that were once seen as the cutting edge of technology that now look laughably crude and simple while others are as fresh today as they were twenty years ago. So what helps a game age well and what causes a game to age poorly?

In this thread discuss the aging process of video games and what makes a game age well or age poorly, with an emphasis on game mechanics, graphics, sound, overall design philosophy etc etc. Examples are of course welcomed.
One thing that ages games horribly is the interface and the lack of options as far as rebinding keys is concerned. There are some oldies I just cannot play after getting used to the WASD layout that is almost standard in first person shooters, for example. Nowadays, I can play Borderlands for a bit and then take on Tower of Guns and I won't need too much time to readjust to either game.

Another thing that ages games is 3D. Call me old-fashioned, if you will, but even today's AAA games will look horrible in about 5-10 years just like those AAA hits of yesteryear tend to poke one's eye out with the jagged edges :)
