I'm currently looking for a decent video camera and thought someone here might have some recommendations.

I think the main point is going to be something that handles indoor lighting well, as I am most likely going to be filming things "around the house" like the cats being crazy/adorable.

Currently looking to spend about 300 GBP (450 USD) but this isn't a hard upper limit (though it is pretty close to one) and it would be even better if I could squeeze two cameras into the budget.

Any pointers on what to be looking at?

I think the usual advice would be something like a GoPro Hero White or Silver edition.
We stock the Black Edition. I believe I can buy them at trade + VAT, but I'd have to check with the mail order people.
Hm.. I already have a "POV camera" (Drift HD) but this GoPro looks a lot better, at least in terms of functionality. The "take photos while recording uninterrupted video" sounds pretty useful (unless it takes the photo at the video resolution...)

Is there any reason to go with a more conventional camera setup?

A couple of the main issues with the Drift I have are the fisheye lens which obviously distorts the image quite significantly at close range and if you record a static image like a landscape, there is a very noticeable shimmer. Also, despite there being a low-light setting, its low-light performance is no better than my smartphone..

I'll have to have a look at some more videos created with this camera to see if it performs how I want. Thanks.

Also.. "we stock"? Does that mean I might get a nmillar-sourced GoPro?

Reviews of the GoPro Hero 3 seem to vary pretty wildly, which I found pretty surprising.

The latest one I read was the quality drops rapidly in indoor situations which is where the camera I want will see the vast majority of its use. This is probably owing to its small (wide angle) lens...

I'd say hit up YouTube and look for GoPro videos indoors. Like so. ;)

I can certainly ask the question ...

Thanks :)

If I didn't know better, I'd say you were rubbing it in that I have been ostracised by my manager, who recently had me moved as far as possible from anyone else in my department, to a desk without a phone.

With the amount of sales calls I receive on a daily basis, that doesn't sound too bad ...

When you are trying to organise training, not having a phone is a massive drag as the people aren't very responsive with other communication methods..

With regards to the camera, though the fisheye lens is still annoying, apparently you can buy replacement lenses to remove the distortion so I could look into replacing it..

Where noise might be less apparent/compression more apparent because of additional compression that YouTube may have done to the video.

Looking at a few of them, looks like it is fine indoors during the daytime but sucks pretty hard with normal artificial lighting only. However, the main problem is that I don't know if it sucks because all cameras suck in such lighting or if it is specific to the GoPro due to the small lens..

You can also record 3D videos with one of these kits: http://www.cyclesurgery.com/pws/UniqueProductKey.ice?ProductID=CGOP002200

If you're near one of our stores, then it might be worth popping in and asking them for a demonstration. Our staff are generally very helpful (we won some kind of retail award recently). I can talk to the manager ahead of time and let them know you're coming and make sure they actually have one there to be able to show you. :)
