Considering the state of THQ, would be neat if they could be convinced to put their games up here too. Being that I do use Steam and Origin (don't throw anything at me, please), I wasn't against picking it up, since I like their games, and I know they're in a bad state. (Though I did give about half the money to charity)

I know that problem. It kept me a long time away from any other digital platform besides Steam. After a while i decided to give gog a chance because they have many old games available elsewhere and now I use many more download services and can choose the one with the best price.

The problem is more that alot of the time I don't have an internet connection, which would severely limit my ability to play games from Steam.

I didn't start this topic to bash steam, I don't have any particularly strong feeling for them one way or another. If I had a decent internet connection and I was settled in one place then I would probably sign up. Well, maybe not. I like supporting gog when I have the time and money to play games.

I just wanted to post about a musing thought, on a side note, when are relic going to make the next homeworld game! Though, considering their recent statements, any sequel would not be a homeworld as we knew it.

I know the feeling... I'd actually love to try some of those THQ games but it isn't worth signing up on steam for.

I know, the irony. Should I just get steam even if I won't be able to play any games from it for chunks of time. I just don't want another account to keep track of, tempting me to pay money and waste time I should be spending on more productive things.

You don't need a decent connection to play the games. Just go into off-line mode. Of course, DLing them might be an issue.

Sure it is. I'm no fan of Steam, but I have a bunch of games on the service. I just refuse to pay more than a few bucks for a game tied to a service, so they never get a big chunk of change from me. But considering the games you can pick up from the THQ bundle for about 6 bucks (if you want to beat the average), I can't imagine how it's not worth signing up for.

I thought I have to connect to the internet every time I want to start a game? Though, it would involve me moving my tower to my sisters to download a game in the first place.

I also like having all my games in one place. I hope THQ sign upto GOG soon, they have alot of good games, been meaning to play the Warhammer games for quite a while.

Steam has an offline mode.

Provided that you've

1) downloaded the latest version of the game from steam

2) run the game at least once in online mode

3) set your account so that your password is saved and it auto turns on/logs in at startup

Then you shouldn't experience any problems with going into offline mode provided that you remain on the same PC configuration. Changing the PC configuration might spark steam guard (which you should have enabled) but then you only need access to email and a very short time online to fix that issue.

The Dawn of War games are fine, the original and expansion have CD-checks and Dark Crusade is DRM-free. Kind of. Buut Dawn of War 2 is DRM-ridden - DoW 2 and expansion need Games for Windows Live! for multiplayer and Steam for authentication, and DoW2: Retribution is completely tied to Steam with MP and DLCs. Long story short: You probably won't see them DRM-free, sadly. There's also Soulstorm, but the less we speak of Soulstorm the better.

This makes it sound way more convoluted than it is.

Install game, launch game, quit game, click "go offline," done.
