I loved the story in God of War. With videogames, the writing is only one element of the story. The crafted a story of revenge with (literally) larger than life gods and goddesses, and it made it a blast to play through. Put it this way-out of my huge game library, I have no other hack and slasher games. It's generally a genre I'm not interested in, but God of War's story was able to consistently entertain me with it bombast and huge set pieces. The writing itself accomplished what it needed to in order to tell the story.

StingingVelvet: God of War (and bear in mind I only played the first one) was more about amazing set-pieces and design.
God of War is a pretty proper Greek Tragedy. This is something Euripides would have enjoyed.
