Fenixp: So you wouldn't mind if they just released a new DLC as you have bought all the previous ones without an issue? Because that's what this was for loyal fans, a new DLC. And I have difficult time understanding how can people complain about a dev opting to charge money for a new DLC - if you're complaining that new customers got a GOTY WITH the new DLC cheaper, well I can assure you that this happens to every game with GOTY released.
Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. I know it is a lame and unoriginal complaint. I just wanna yell about stuff.
I just wish loyalty went both ways, however unrealistic that may be...

toxicTom: ...
Deus Ex DC actually manages to re-introduce some OLD bugs if you can believe that. Nah, it's new content and upgraded engine.

Q.U.B.E Director's Cut - "includes a story, DLC, soundtrack " - yeah, that. Not fixes, the base game was fine in that regard.

Metro 2033 and Metro Last Light - they get a facelift for next-gen consoles, i. e. they're redone on an updated engine. Not that Last Light particulary needs that.
It's much easier to wait for a GOTY or Gold edition when you have a large backlog of great games. Thanks, GOG!

Bigs: Recent times has seen this begin to creep into the gaming industry and is a disgusting practice IMO. Off the top of my head are the most recent examples
What exactly do you mean by "Recent Times"? 15 years? 20? Or are we ignoring those and only focus on the newer ones?
Biggest example would of course be the "Pay to get voices" packs Origin (and fans) loved. Not to mention the "$5 for 3.5" disks" offers.
For me it totally depends on the changes, additions and pricing.
Deus Ex at least gave people a good discount if they already owned the game and the DLC, so I didn't find that to be too bad. Like JMich said, it's been around for a long time.
Also, wasn't Serious Sam Revolution made by another team and such?
And you get it for free if you already own the classics, so again I'm not too bothered by that.
The way now is selling you the same game, a lot of times.

GOTY are great, and you can save much money with them, BUT.

You never know when a GOTY or a Complete edition will be out.

Let's take Arkham Origins. Both AA and AC got a GOTY edition, but at least for now, no Complete Edition for AO was listed.

About the Deus EX charging factor, it was pretty lame too. You must pay 4€ for an UPDATE. Yes, because you pay 4€ ONLY if you own ALL Deus Ex Human Revolution DLC. And the new version doesn't add anything, it only fixes some things (introducing brand new bug too, they just released a patch to fix them).

This must stops now. It's a horrible trend, because it screws customers over and over. Do you want the better version? Then PAY again, even if you already supported us.

First they want make easy money by using people that already own the game. THEN come new customers.

For a guy who has the originals on CD still, and waited for years for someone to bring a proper widescreen fix, it bothers me.

Which patch have you heard about? Both on the Steam and Eidos forums it seems there's nothing but silence from the developers. Not only were brand new bugs introduced, old bugs resurfaced since the Director's Cut was forked from an earlier Original Version. And finally the "orange hue", which defined the game for me through trailers and previews, has been removed, apparently giving the whole game a more bland (though colourful) look...

Send them an e-mail, can't hurt.

Just shot them a message on their Facebook page, let's see if this will go anywhere.
If developers start acting like douche bags, just don't buy their games anymore. And treat those who do as traitors.

You can't always trust a GOTY or Gold Edition nowadays... They could come out with a GOTY Edition and then 1 year later, a GOTY Enhanced Edition...

Thief: The Dark Project => Thief Gold

I don't think they even gave any discount for people who owned the original. The bastards!

Seriously speaking, there is a fine line between what can be considered as merely an update fixing bugs, and additional content. I am also generally against the idea having to pay extra to get bug fixes.

Kudos to developers who offer extra content even free of charge, including:

CDPR
Mojang
Valve

They should have a DLC that unlocks the release date of the future GOTY!

I prefer complete editions and since I save money by waiting so I can acquire many titles I'm never out of titles so waiting isn't hard but I agree that it's still a dishonest move, the problem is that competition is too high and most gamers have quite low standards (it's all about the gameplay!-attitude).

MetalPixel: "Your save files get deleted every time? $5 dollars please"
Well, this is apparantly true for Q.U.B.E. already. It happened to me, too, and since the workaround doesn't appear to work for me, I guess I'll have to abandon the game as I don't feel like repeating all the stuff I did already.

Regarding actual patches and important gameplay improvements, I think the way to go is offer separate versions, that is keep the original version and sell an enhanced version with extra stuff separately, but make sure both versions are up-to-date with the latest patch and the enhanced version only has optional stuff, nothing essential.

I liked how Harebrained Schemes did it with Shadowrun Returns, when the new DLC came with improved gameplay features like a better save system, but those features were patched into the original version, too, even if you didn't buy the DLC.

And publishers should also consider options to upgrade basic versions to GOTY / Collector's Edition / Director's Cut for those who already bought it, instead of making them buy the game a second time.
