I've been playing CRPGs since Ultima IV: Quest of the Avatar. I feel CRPGs have been getting better and better. The storytelling, quality and generally everything have really improved over the years.

For all the delusional idiots and "RPG elitists" who argue that somehow StarFlight is superior to Mass Effect or Wasteland is better than Fallout 3, you can take your floppy disks and shove them up your @$$!!!

Tsk, tsk, tsk. So angry, so quick to call people names...and so wussy that autocensors even something as innocent as 'ass'. Also, I've no idea what's a StarFlight, but I presume it's a RPG, no? Then why are you comparing them to shooters with some RPG elements? Different genres, dude.

Landeril: I need Awakening. <.< And DA:2. You make me wanna shoot you with Storm of the Century!

Heretic777: I haven't bothered to learn that spell yet. Instead I prefer my fav mage spell...Crushing Prison. Not only does it paralyze the target, but it slow crushes it to death...such fun! Perfect for handling enemy mages before they can even get off their first spell...LOL.
Lol This is true. Storm of The Century is Tempest + Blizzard

Only if your version of "good stories" means "movie-like stories." As far as advancing storytelling in interesting new directions, CRPGs (and gaming in general) have come to a pretty dead halt.

hunvagy: Get Awakening, but stay away from DA2. I bought the signature. It's still in its box. I could only take 1 hour of that crapfest. And yes, I will probably be marked as an elitist, but after playing DA:O I was NOT expecting a dumbed down diabloesque clickfest as combat. Or that you only have combat skills, and they opted to remove any skill even the farthest in conjunction with social things, in favor of the shitty ME2 movie choice system. But yeah, I like my RPGs with stats, with character progression that makes sense, that doesn't venture much into hack 'n slash territory, proper story, and preferably a solid PnP system in the ancestry to back it up. I read a lot of suggestions and ideas on these pages, but if you really want to experience where RPGs could be today, then I urge you to play two games:

Drakensang and Drakensang: The river of time.

They are the real successors to the RoA series, and you will not be disappointed. I sank more then 80 hours into each, and had fun all the way.

As for RPGs in general, the selling point is mimicing WoW these days it seems, so the mainstream games went that way. Look at Kingdoms of Amalur, it looks like a semi single player wow. And I think that with the demise of Origin/Ultima, the last bastion of mainstream RPG gaming is Bethesda. Especially since Bioware ***** itself out to EA and is making crappy cover based shooters with movie storylines now. We were joking around that DA3 will be a cover based shooter as well. Then the first news hit that it'll be team and cover based.. WTF...
Too late I bought DA2 and actually like it. Save for that I was a Dual Wielding Warrior in DA:O

Arkose: That's the plan, but how many will fall for it? Granted, there is some acceptance among gamers to pay for things that shouldn't have a fee (Xbox Live being the obvious example here) but so far there have been no games where a single player-style experience has ongoing fees; if anything there have been an increasing number of previously paid MMOGs going free-to-play as well as some that have a base entry cost but are subscription-free after that (like Guild Wars).

StingingVelvet: I think more people play MMOs in a totally solo way than anyone realizes.
+1 I'm one of those. MMO imho = you can solo them, but its more meant to be a social type of gaming. Got bored trying to solo different MMO's....
