i joined this site about 2 months ago and have seen games here i have never heard of, and its these games which puzzle me the most, i have never seen them, heard of them, or anything until i joined here, what makes them so adored?

some people say if your gonna buy a game buy the krondor games but i want to know from the people that have played them what they think?
Only played the first Krondor game. It's a quite beautiful game [looking at it from the early 90's perspective]. It's also one of the best RPGs ever made, surely in the top 5 of cRPGs. The story is narrated as a book, You even see it as a page from a book, along with the page number. Don't really know what more can be said, the game is [ well, was in 1993] ground breaking, the story, the narration, the graphics, the system, the soundtrack.

I think it's a must for RPG lovers, a standout classic, from the age when originality counted, and games weren't riddled with cutscenes.
I played the demo of Betrayal many years ago, but I scarcely remember it. It's yet another game that I simply missed out on. Looking at the screenshots, though, I'm sorely tempted to buy it, despite that I've already got a huge pile of RPGs waiting at home.

Just how much non-dialogue text is there in this game? The power of text is often woefully overlooked in CRPGs, even those released years ago. Even with modern graphical power, a few lines describing the night air or a dank prison cell can evoke images and sensations that would otherwise escape us. I squee whenever I play an RPG or a NWN module that offers me vivid text in addition to the graphics and sound. I just finished Eschelon: Book I, in fact, and the fact that it complemented its simple graphics with frequent footnotes that indulged my imagination was probably what I liked best about it.

It has both dialogues and non-dialogue text, and the latter is exceptionally good, at least IMO. Every chapter has 2-3 pages of intro text, and also 1-3 pages of outro, plus every single item in the game has a nice, immersive description, not to mention mid-chapter, quest-related texts.

Simply, Betrayal at Krondor is one of the best RPG's of its time (some say of all times). It has great setting, fantastic tactical turn-based combat system, freedom of exploration (mostly) and it 'feels' like reading a good fantasy book. In fact I recommend to read the Riftwar Saga before you play it. The books are great and you'll have so much more fun playing the game afterwards.

Return to Krondor is good but not great like Betrayal. And it's a lot shorter, but still worth playing. Also you don't have to know Betrayal to enjoy Return.
