Dear Gog,

Save for the odd occasion, I basically stopped playing computer games in the mid 90s, when I discovered girls and alcohol.

When I became old, I realised that I wanted to play games again. But I did not have sufficient control of my opposable thumbs to handle all of the buttons on an x-box or playstation controller. I also lacked the reflexes that seem to be required to play modern action (and even real time strategy) games. I yearned for the good old days when video games were easier for someone like me to understand and play.

I had in the past attempted to play old games that I had purchased in my youth (and retained in boxes displayed on my shelf), such as wonders from the Space Quest series, Quest for Glory, Ultima 7 (although I could not find my tea towel map), Wing Commander, and the old SSI games. Some worked, others did not, some seemed to struggle with my super fast pc.

I gave up on games and purchased a macbook. I did so because I am old and thought it was time for me to be serious and do mac type things on a mac. like organise my music and photos.

Then I discovered GOG. A gentleman by the name of "Total Biscuit" mentioned the site. At first I was fearful that the games would not work on my mac and was saddened by my decision to purchase such a device. Then I discovered Boxer, and Wine and ScummVM. And the world was wonderous for me.

Not only did I start to purchase GOG games, such as Jagged Alliance, Master of Orion, etc, but I found that I could play my old games with my new knowledge of how to use the combined might of Boxer and Wine and ScummVM and suddenly my old collection of games were open to me (with the assistance of an external floppy drive - and some luck with floppy disks not being degraded).

And then I realised that good games were made after 1995, which suited my style, such as Broken Sword, Baldur's Gate, etc, and I purchased these games from GOG at what could only be described as ridiculously low prices.

So GOG, I write to say thank you. Thank you for allowing me the pleasure of re-living my childhood memories and for allowing me to make new memories.

Thank You
Hear, hear!
Ha ha! Too true. Welcome to the community, bro. I'm sure you'll like it here just fine. ;-)
What, that was too long? I didn't even have to scroll the screen to read it all!

I know this..
Old -you say- are you? My guess: 30-35? :-)
Welcome to gog.com...Here you will find many 'old chaps' like you.
Strange... we had a similarity there... There was a period from the end of 1996 (or early 1997) to late 2002 when I did not play computer games at all, but rather than because of girls and alcohol it was simply because I did not own a computer at all. By the time I owned my first laptop in the end of 2002, it was not strong enough to play newest games (at that time), so instead I played DOS games with DOSBox. I joined an abandonware site that time, from which I learnt how to use DOSBox.

I heard about GOG from that abandonware site sometime in 2008, but did not join GOG until May 2010. To join GOG is one of the best decision I had in life, I must say :-)
Total Biscuit is indeed an awesome fellow. His Terraria Let's Play is quite funny, if a little infrequently updated.
I don't mean to go off-topic or argue here, but it's stories like this that's makes me hope GOG continues to focus on mostly old games instead of branching off into the new.
Girls and booze, the age old nemesis of gaming ....
Well thanks for responding. Nice to know people took the time to read :)
Good to see a fellow Aussie on the site :)
Welcome !

Most internet users today complain the text is too long if they have to tilt their eyes a bit.
