Newegg is going to have Hitachi Deskstar 5K3000 2TB drives for sale for $69 ($59 after rebate) later today, so I require GOG.com's help!

Do these suck? I had a Deskstar that literally FRIED itself seven years ago. But again, that WAS seven years ago! I want to take a gamble so I can replace two 500GB drives I have in my system with this.

Help me GOG.com peoples, you're my only hope, or something!

Best bet is to just buy them and test the hell out of them.
Check storagereviews and other reviews on the internet.

Anything you hear about hard drives on the internet is usually subjective.

I've only used Western Digital HD's since the deathstar fiasco and have only experienced the typical amount of HD failures. Other people have different results. There are many factors that can cause HD failure and usually it's not the fault of the HD itself but PEBKAC.
Yes, Hitachi suck. I can't tell you how reliable those particular drives are but the company has the piss poor history it does through its employment of the lowest standards it can get away with. I would not want to take a chance on that company again. It's the kind of drive that finds its way into pre-built computers built by unscrupulous computer manufactures looking to save a few quid wherever they can. It's not something you should actually choose to have.

Reviews are no better. If anything they're worse as they focus on drive speed and ease of installation. You seldom see any comments on lifespan and overall build quality. That's something you're only going to find out from people who have used products by the manufacturer over a more substantial period.
